Celebration of Life for Mr. Joe Montgomery, Jr. will be held at 1 O'clock p.m. on Friday, July 14, 2017 at Greater Grace Church in Ashville, AL. where Bishop Terry A. Jones, Pastor. Officiating, will be Rev. Thomas Robertson Pastor at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Ashville, AL. Interment will follow in Ashville Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 13, 2017 at St. Paul United Methodist Church from 5-7p.m.
Joe Montgomery, Jr. was born October 24, 1928 in St. Clair County to the late Joe Montgomery, Sr. and Auttie Byers- Montgomery.
Joe was a true and faithful servant to the Lord. He accepted Christ at an early age and later became a devoted member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. During his early adult years, he joined Sweet Home United Methodist Church in Gadsden, AL. Upon returning to Ashville to reside closer to family, he resumed membership at St. Paul, where he served in the following capacities: Chair of the administrative board, member of the PPR committee. trustee board and choir.
After graduating Ashville High School, he joined the United States Army, where he achieved the rank of Sargent in service during the Korean War. He later returned home ad served his country in the Army National Guard.
In 1954, Joe was united in holy matrimony to Imogene Montgomery. He was a devoted husband who loved and cared for his wife and was particularly devoted in administering to her health in recent years.
He was a wise man of few words. he was kind-hearted man who loved his family and friends. Known for his hearty, infectious laughter, he spoke well and spoke on the positive traits of everyone. Joe was well respected throughout the community and was viewed as a role model or surrogate father-figure to many. he believed in working hard for what he wanted out of life and sharing his blessings with others.
He retired after over 40 years from Republic Steel. Following his retirement he attended Gadsden State Community College in preparation for his next work endeavor. He worked as a Walmart greeter in Oneonta, Al. well into his 80's and eventually retired to care for his wife.
Joe loved spending time in his garden and sharing his harvest with friends and family. As a civic minded individual he was a member of the Black Democratic Caucus, NAACP,SCLC and a Masonic Lodge Member with the highest rank of achievement. During the Civil Rights era, Joe actively participated in peaceful demonstrations in the Civil Rights movement for the rights of all Americans.
He was preceded in death by: his brothers, Wallace Montgomery and J.D. Montgomery; sisters, Evelyn M. Bothwell, Ozella Montgomery, and Christine Robinson. Many memories of love and kindness was shared by this family.
Joe leaves to cherish his precious life: his loving wife, Imogene Montgomery; one brother, Nathanial Montgomery; children: Teresa (Marcus) Chatman, Kaeonna Looney, Sylvia Williams, Stephanie Brown, LaShun Cook; four grandchildren, four great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews great nieces, cousins, other relatives and many very devoted friends.
