Gwen was a unique person...jovial, sincere, straightforward, amusing, and just a joy to be around. She was a brilliant storyteller without even knowing it. The times that I had the privilege to be in her company were great. We shared the same passion for bridge and traveled and played together on occasion. I called her the day before her death just to check in. No answer....The news of her death was a shock. I hoped that somehow she could pull through her illness! May she now rest in peace❤️ Willetta

Dr. Ann D. Smith Dr. Gwendolyn Middlebrooks was a dear friend and fellow teacher educator. She and I had the fortunate opportunity to serve as professors and leaders in teacher education roles at Spelman and I at Kennesaw State respectively. We first met at one of our Georgia Association of Teacher (GATE) Conferences back in the late 1980´s and continued that long friendship into our well deserved retirement. However, she never fully retired . She remained active in professional associations including Georgia Association of Teacher Educators ( GATE) . She was not only recognized and performed distinguished work in education at the local , state levels , but also through her work with regional, national and international affiliates. She will be remembered as a mentor, leader, scholar , master teacher and influential leader in teacher and leadership education . Dr. Middlebrooks was truly a minister of education. Her legacy will live forever through the lives she touched as a leader in education; not to mention the her role as a wife , mother and grandmother. Dear friend Rest Peace after making exceptional contributions to all aspects of humanity. The world is a better place because of contributions made to it by Dr. Gwendolyn Middlebrooks! My deepest condolences to her beloved husband and my friend Mr. James Middlebrooks and their blessed family.
Our sincerest condolences from Bobby Davis & family
Dr. Middlebrooks was a beacon of light, wisdom, encouragement, and overall support during my time as an Education major at Spelman College. She would always ensure we were well abreast of all things education, charged us with being student leaders and eventually the best, most poised and well dressed educators our students would encounter. Even more than that she was living history that we got to experience on a daily basis. She literally will hold space in my heart forever and I'm so grateful for every bit of her life. Rest peacefully Dr. Middlebrooks. I will aim to make you proud. Sending Mr. Middlebrooks and the entire family my love, condolences, and prayers as they navigate this transition of their matriarch.
Love,

In loving memory of Dr. Gwendolyn Middlebrook, a civil rights activist and cherished educator. Dr. Middlebrooks was a guiding light in my world of Bridge; she not only shared her knowledge but also her passion. Dr. Gwendolyn Middlebrooks's gesture of handing me my first rulebook that and in Bridge, it was more than a gift; it was an introduction to the world of strategy, camaraderie, and endless fascination. I am grateful for her guidance and camaraderie on this British journey. Dr. Middlebrook's passion for Bridge and dedication to fostering a welcoming environment in the Bridge community as she traveled to play in tournaments in Atlanta and elsewhere was inspiring. She inspired many. Her legacy of kindness and knowledge will forever live on in our hearts. Rest in peace, Dr. Middlebrook." Gwendolyn L. Littleton White

Dr. Gwendolyn Middlebrooks was one of my favorite teachers at Spelman. My father (an educator for 43 years) told me in his final days "The most honorable thing one human being can do for another is to teach them." When I remember Dr. Middlebrooks I see her peeping at me over her glasses and admonishing me to be an exceptional teacher. What she placed in me was reflected throughout my 30 years as an educator in Atlanta Public Schools and beyond. She was my teacher, my Spelman sister and my Soror. Gwendolyn Harris Middlebrooks was a most honorable woman. Tresha Harris Jackson '87
