Mr. Leuel Million Mekonnen passed away on October 11, 2021 at the age of 20 unexpectedly in his parents’ residence in Summerfield, NC, USA.
Mr. Leuel was born in Chelenko, Ethiopia on October 31, 2000 to Mr. Million G. Mekonnen and Mrs. Selamawit Yeshitela Gebeyehu.
When he was old enough to go to school, he completed his primary education at Chiro Africa Elementary School. After moving to the USA, he completed his middle school at Our Lady of Grace Catholic School in Greensboro, NC and Bishop McGuiness Catholic High School in Kernersville, NC. Not only did the teachings and curriculum help him form a great personality, they also allowed him various opportunities to grow. As a Catholic philosophy of education, students must be educated for personal and communal freedom, authenticity, and to strive for the common societal good.
After completing his primary education in Ethiopia, Mr. Leuel moved to the United States in 2014 to live with his father, where he was admitted to North Carolina A&T State University, studying Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. He was a second-year student until his time of sudden death. He referred to himself as a legend. Mr. Leuel is known and remembered by many for his humility, love, and sincerity. He will always be remembered for his smile and playfulness and deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.
“For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.” Psalms 91:11
“Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
Funeral service will be held Saturday, October 16, 2021 at 8:30 a.m. at Phillips Funeral Service Chapel.

Leuel, it has been 3 years since you passed away. I miss you and I love you. I wish I can see you again.
Leuel, I love you and I miss you. I wish I can see you again.
Leuel was a good coworker and a good friend outside of work. In months before passing we got Closer as friends and I always thought he was such a funny and great spirit to be around. I was going through a rough depression in life and Leuel was so positive in keeping me happy and I appreciated him deeply as a friend and I'll miss the laughs we shared and all the funny, corky, jokester moments we had and just wanted to say thanks for being a great friend and happy you are in a better place. I love you bro.
Leuel was a good friend of mine during our time at Bishop and I feel so privileged to have memories with him that I will remember forever. I watched Leuel be a positive and kind light to everyone around him. His smile and laughter would brighten a room and it was always such a joy to be around him. I will miss him dearly but I am extremely grateful for the impact he made on my life and for the support, loyalty, and love he offered our friend group. May Leuel Rest In Peace and be remembered for a lifetime.
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Mekonnen: My heart is breaking for you - Leuel was a great favorite of mine and his other teachers at OLG. He was such a joy to know and teach - always smiling and thinking of others. He will be so missed. I pray that God's healing peace brings you comfort at this difficult time and that Leuel's spirt of happiness and love will abide with us always. ~ In deepest sympathy, Lisa Saintsing
I did not know Leuel, but I saw the announcement of his passing through my school email. I just wanted to share that Jesus will walk with you all in this time of grieving.(Hebrews 4:14-16) He is able to bring comfort and rest to your souls during this hard season. God bless you.
To a young Angel led of God. May you have eternal rest in your Heavenly Home. Just looking at your signature smile on Phillips Obituaries captivated my attention to read yours. To my child Aggie brother, may you rest peacefully. Our Savior was waiting to receive you early as you entered the Pearly Gates. Jeannette F. Porter
I will cherish my memories of Leuel and send love and support to his parents for this tragic loss. Leuel was a ray of sunshine during his time at OLG. Leuel demonstrated great bravery as a new English speaker in a school where no one spoke his native language. I will tuck my memories of his radiant smile in my heart forever. My heartfelt condolences to his family. Joan Sloyan
We are praying for you and your family during this difficult time. I hope you feel the power of God's love and His presence in your lives. Yodit from Durham NC.
So so sorry for this terrible loss. My heart just breaks for the wonderful friends and family who are left behind.
I first met Leuel as a 7th grader, proud to be in Greensboro with his father and with few English skills. Leuel conquered the language barrier with his quick wit, joyous smile and ability to share his thoughts openly. By senior year he had big plans ahead. He made the world seem closer and cultures meld. I am sad for all of us that he is gone. Julie Gehling
Million and Family, extending my deepest condolences during this time of sorrow. May your warm and loving memories of Leuel console and comfort you now and forever. With sympathy and prayer, Pat Priest
There is simply on one else like Leuel. After going to Bishop with Leuel for four years that was very easy to see. I can proudly say I've never met someone who is as radiant and as proud of his culture than Leuel Mekonnen. It would be a challenge to think of a time that he didn't have a smile on his face or wasn't cracking jokes. Leuel was an amazing soul and I will miss him every day. God Bless the Mekonnen family
I will never forget all the crazy and fun things that Leuel and I did at Bishop. God rest his soul and he will be missed.
Leuel was the greatest friend I, or anyone could ask for. He was always true to his convictions and beliefs. Had an ocean of potential to offer the world, integrity, loyalty, honor, and a great sense of humor. We miss you brother. Rest In Peace brother 🙏🏼
Leuel was one of the few at Bishop that never failed to put a smile on my face. He was an absolute angel and I will never forget the few memories we got to make while I knew him. Sending lots of prayers.
This is a very sad, unexpected news. I will always remember our regular brief meetings around 11 AM every other day, while he was heading for his Calculus II class and I was heading to teach a Chem class. Leuel would glow with his signature smile radiating from far. Although, both were in hurry to our respective classes, the conversation was genuine. What a potential we lost. RIP Leuel--- Zerihun
Leuel was one of the sweetest students I've ever known. I will never forget his bright smile and gentle, joyful spirit. My heart breaks for his family and friends. We are certainly mourning at Bishop McGuinness.
Leuel was one of the kindest souls I ever taught. The world has lost one of its brightest lights. I will keep keep his memory alive at Bishop and his family in my prayers. -Ms. Allie Katsos
