Obituary For Mr. Daniel Calvin Glasgow

Deacon Daniel Calvin Glasgow transitioned from life’s labor to eternal reward on Saturday, July 31, 2021. He was born to the late Mr. Nathaniel Ellison and Mrs. Clara Mae Gallman Clark on March 12, 1948, in Newberry, SC. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Johnny C. Glasgow, James Ervin Glasgow, Henry Glasgow, and Roosevelt Clark; and three sisters, Janie Mae Wood, Sharlene Clark, and Blondell E. Glasgow.

As a youth, he relocated to High Point, NC where he received his education in the Guilford County public schools. After moving back to his hometown of Newberry, he joined Bush River Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a trustee under the pastoral care of the Reverend James I. Leverette. He was a part of the Meridian Lodge No. 9, The Daughters of Meridian No. 274 OES, The J.C. Copeland Consistory No. 361, and The Sons of Aid Society in Newberry, SC.

In 2009, he was ordained a deacon in the Lord’s church under the pastoral care of his son, Bishop Tavaris Johnson. In 2015, after a brief illness, Deacon Glasgow decided to move back to High Point to be closer to his children and family. It was then that he joined Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Cameron, NC to support his son in the ministry and he served faithfully as a deacon until July 2019. Deacon Glasgow enjoyed listening to gospel music (especially quartet), reading the Bible, artwork, fishing, shopping, riding out, spending time with his family, and church services. He loved traveling with the Johnson Brothers of High Point to hear them sing. His final worship service was at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Badin, NC where his son is the senior pastor. He was an avid painter born with a natural gift for art. During his working years, he was a subcontractor in carpentry and maintenance as a painter. He worked at Drayton Street Recreation Center of Newberry, SC, Pennybyrn Nursing Home and RC Baldwin School both in High Point, NC before retiring in 2013. Deacon Glasgow had a strong personality, was a sharp and detailed dresser, was one who spoke his mind, and was a force to be reckoned with on the dance floor.

In the words of the Apostle Paul, Deacon Glasgow “Fought a good fight, he finished his course, he kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for him a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give him at that day: and not to him only, but unto all those who love his appearing.” (2 Timothy 4:7-8). From your daughters, sons, grandchildren, sisters, brother, nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends, we all say to you, “…Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, God has made thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.” (Matthew 25:21).

Those who remain to cherish his loving and lasting memories are, his children whom he loved dearly: three daughters, Laverne Campbell of Archdale, NC, Clara Glasgow of High Point, NC, and Glenda Roberts of Archdale, NC; two sons, Terrence Jermaine Johnson of Greensboro, NC and Bishop Tavaris Johnson (his wife, First Lady Whitnei Johnson) of Sanford, NC; five bonus children whom he raised as his own: one bonus daughter, Shirleen Johnson-Williams of High Point, NC; four bonus sons, Terrence Sanders of Greensboro, NC, Titus Johnson of Carthage, NC, Jarvis Sanders of Austin, TX and Twain Johnson of Greensboro, NC; three sisters, Lillie Pike of Chapel Hill, NC, Evangelist Thelma Suber (her husband, Robert Suber) of Greensboro, NC and Deborah Gallman of Newberry, SC; one brother, Percy Ellison of Suitland, MD; 16 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be held Friday, August 6, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Service Chapel. Interment will follow at Guil-Rand Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the chapel from 11:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. The family will also receive friends on Thursday, August 5, 2021 from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at 810 Gordon Street.
