Obituary For Annie Scarborough

Annie Scarborough made her transition from this life on Saturday, June 26, 2021 at WFBH High Point Medical Center. She was born July 19, 1950, in High Point, NC, the daughter of the late William Houston and Vergie Gaskins. She was the oldest of four children. She was a proud graduate of William Penn High School “LAST CLASS of 1968” (before total integration) where she played tennis, which was her favorite sport to watch. She even watched the French Open a week before her passing. In addition to her parents, Annie was preceded in death by her grandmother, Lillie Smith, and youngest brother, Everette Javon Gaskins.

After high school and one semester attending N.C. A&T, Annie began her professional career at Prudential Insurance Group. She was a loyal employee for 25+ years serving as a claim processor and later a supervisor that required frequent travel to Florida. During her faithful years at Prudential, she developed friendships that will be everlasting.

Annie was the “cook of all cooks.” She made the best tasting collards, macaroni and cheese, broccoli casserole and potato salad. People would drive from Winston Salem and Greensboro for her potato salad. Annie spoiled her daughters because they never had to cook for Thanksgiving or Christmas Holiday. Her family looked forward to her Sunday meals accompanied by her good ole sweet tea.

Annie became a member of Williams Memorial C.M.E. Church (then St. Matthews) at the age of 16 and began a life-long commitment of servanthood. As a teenager she attended conferences. As an adult, per her mother’s request to assist, she served as an advisor for the Young Harmonettes (now Robert J. Williams Young Adult Choir). Annie served with passion and commitment in the following ministries:

• Stewardess • Adult representative and member of the local and regional Board of Christian Education • Officer and member of the Choral Ensemble, Mass Choir and RJW • Officer and member of the local and regional Missionary Society

She was a founding member of the Ebony Gospel Chorale and from that ministry a family bond was created.

Annie will be cherished by her three children, Rev. Niki Scarborough Spencer (Thomas), Pamela Scarborough James (Shawn), and Billy R. Scarboro, Jr.; The Mighty Seven grandchildren, Cedric D’Shaun, Stephany Siara, Stacey Simone, Jacob Bracy, Starr Sinece, Aiden Jonathan and Austin Roger; two great-grandchildren, Kamryn Brielle-Lynn and Camari Thomas; one sister, Linda “Peaches” Campbell; one brother, Lonnell “Zeke” Roseboro (Lisa). She will also be remembered by her nieces, nephews, cousins (Smith, Houston, Lee & Glover families); god-daughter, Courtney Allen; god-son, Jeremy McCray; dear friends, Annette Baldwin, Debra Bell Lowe, Dorothy Lawson and many who were near and dear to her.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, July 3, 2021 at 1:30 p.m. at Living Water Baptist Church, 1300 Brentwood Street. Interment will follow at Guil-Rand Memorial Park. Ms. Scarborough may be viewed on Friday, July 2, 2021 at Phillips Funeral Service Chapel from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Final arrangements are entrusted to Phillips Funeral Service, Inc.
