Virginia Hampton Brown, 91 years old, of Eden, NC, went home to be with the Lord on July 1, 2023, after a brief illness. Virginia, who was affectionately known as Doll Brown was born on February 7, 1932, to loving parents, the late Joseph H. Hampton and the late Vergelene Casey of Eden, NC. Doll was their 3rd child but the oldest daughter of the 10 children in the family. She was a jewel to her parents because she stepped in to help take care of the younger children.
Upon graduation from Douglass High School in 1951, Doll took her first job with Hadley’s laundry as a laundry worker. Like many of her siblings, she visited Washington, DC in the 60’s but decided she preferred to live in the South. She returned home and worked many years at Fieldcrest Mills as a textile worker. If you shopped with her, she knew how to choose the very best quality in linens, towels, and bedding.
Doll grew up in the Blue Creek community and in 1957 married the love of her life, James Melvin Brown, who grew up in the same community. He was not James Brown from the Famous Flames, but he was a gospel quartet crooner, and she was mesmerized by his singing. From this union 3 children were born. The Browns were married for 39 years, and Doll lived as a widow for 27 years. She loved her husband dearly and until the day she transitioned she carried his picture and obituary in her walker. She often said she was never alone because she felt her husband’s presence daily. She accepted Christ at an early age and remained a life-long member of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church, Eden, NC where she served in the past as a Sunday School secretary, choir and Goodwill Savings club member.
Known for her wisdom, witty personality and laughter, she would cut a telephone call short just in time for Family Feud. You might be talking to her, but she would not respond. She was frugal yet extremely generous and humble. She gave unconditionally and for years supported St Jude’s Cancer Research so she could stop childhood cancer. She looked forward to receiving her personalized address labels in time for Christmas. Her home was the social club of Blue Creek and she had so many friends of all ages. Additionally, she loved all family reunions, especially the Perkins and Law, Martin, Hampton and Gravely family reunions. She loved unconditionally and encouraged her friends to stay faithful to God. Her favorite Bible scripture was Romans 15:13 which talks about our trust and hope in God.
Doll was also preceded by 5 siblings-Joseph, Jr, Andrew, Samuel, Florence and Hilda. Her loving daughter, Katie Marie Felder, who went home to be with the Lord on April 19, 2023.
She is survived by: her children; Melvin Brown of Hollywood, Fla and Terry Ann Gales (Charles) of Frederick, MD, son-in-law Charles Felder of Dumfries, VA, grandchildren; Major Kelli Pryor (Lance) of West Point, NY, Julian Felder of Chapel Hill, NC, Erinn Gales of Glen Burnie, MD, Sydney Felder of Washington, DC, and great granddaughter, Virginia Pryor. Sisters; Nannie Galloway of Washington, DC, Estelle Harris (William) of Charlotte, NC, Patricia Wynn of Clinton, MD, Verna Lisenby of Eden, NC and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and close friends. Some special friends are Rayford Boyd, Elias Gilbert, Carl Smith, Keith Stone, Brenda Hester-Smith, Addie Holloway, Yulanda Hugh and Dottie Felder Jones. Doll felt a close family and friends especially the friends in her community was God’s way of showing us we don’t have to walk alone.
