Barbara Mae Payne, 90 of Ridgeway, VA passed Wednesday, February 12, 2025. Public viewing will be held from 2:00 p.m. β 5:00 p.m. Friday, February 21, 2025, at Perry-Spencer Funeral Home, 402 Short Avenue Madison, NC. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. β 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 22, 2025, at Christian View Missionary Baptist Church, 360 Arrowhead Circle Spencer, VA. with the Homegoing Service beginning at 1:00 p.m. with interment to follow at Spencer-Redd Family Cemetery off Wagon Trail Road. Ridgeway, VA.
Barbara Mae Payne, 90, was born in Patrick County to the late James Wythe and Fannie Redd Edwards. She departed this life Wednesday, February 12, 2025 at Mulberry Creek Nursing Home in Martinsville, VA.
After becoming a resident of the Horsepasture Community, she attended the One Room School
House in Spencer, before being a student in the first graduating from the George Washington
Carver High School in Fieldale in 1951, at the age of 16.
During her childhood years, she joined Christian View Missionary Baptist Church of Spencer,
where she was a dedicated, loyal, and faithful member. She was a life member of Smith River
Missionary Baptist Association Inc. She served many years as a Domestic Worker, before working at Pannill Knitting Mill. She also volunteered as a Gray Lady at Martinsville Memorial Hospital for several years. She was a member of the Family & Community Educators, formerly the Home Demonstration Club.
In addition to her parents and husband of, Gentry R. Payne, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Moir Edwards, Robert Edwards, Dillard Edwards, Larkin Edwards, and Arthur Edwards; two sisters, Charity E. Martin and Sarah E. Penn; and one son, Steven Jason Payne.
She leaves behind to celebrate her life one son, Ralph (Renee) Payne of Martinsville; Five (5)
grandchildren, Lange (Melissa) Payne, Bloomington, IL; Chavez (Tiffany) Payne, Deluth, GA;
Jason (Christa) Payne, Lawsonville, VA; Michael (Maggie) Houchins, Stuart, VA; Tony Travers,
Henrico, VA; Eight (8) great-grandchildren Jozef, Vincent, Lia, Kali, Kingston, Kinsley, Payne;
Brianna and Lyric Houchins; two sisters, Edith Pitzer of Martinsville, and Iris Stone (Andrew)
Patterson of Ridgeway; a special goddaughter Christa Tarpley; and a host of nieces, nephews,
relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the son, Ralph Payne.
