Obituary For John H. Walton

A time to be born: John Henry Walton was born on January 29, 1941 Danville, Pittsylvania County Virginia to the late Frank and Geneva Ferrrell Walton. John was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Barbara Walton Holland.

A time to die: As the sun came up on the horizon on December 9, 2020. Our Heavenly Father called John’s name and John answered quietly and peacefully, and John was called from his earthly labors to receive his heavenly reward. A time to love: On August 9, 1966 and again on December 23, 2006, John was united in holy matrimony to Patricia Woodson. To this union God saw fit for John and Patricia to adopt, at birth, John Michael Walton.

A time to Serve God: John was a faithful Bible reader. Whenever he found a quiet moment he was in the word. John was a faithful member of Trinity A.M.E. Zion. He faithfully attended the Class of David for Sunday School. He was a member of the Men’s Progressive Club, a Lay Council Life Member and a member of the Missionary Life Members Council.

A time to work: John entered the armed forces, Army, after graduation from Southside High School in Blairs, Virginia. John retired in 1980, after serving twenty years. He worked in various transportation sections. John served in Germany (2), Korea (2), Vietnam and Thailand 2). He loved to drive anything with four or more wheels.

John received the following medals: NATIONAL DEFENSE SERVICE MEDAL, GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL (5TH AWARD) OVERSEA SERVICE BARS (2) VIETNAM SERVICE MEDAL, VIETNAM CAMPAIGN MEDAL, and ARMY COMMENDATION MEDAL.

A time to live: John made an impact on everyone he met. He visited every hospital, attended every funeral, and telephoned everyone he knew to just talk. John loved taking pictures and traveling. We visited Hawaii in 2007, traveled to over seven European countries in October of 2012, the site of the 9/11/01 World Trade Center in 2014, and the Great Wall of China in 2015. We cruised the upper mighty Mississippi River in 2016.

John never believed in calling before visiting anyone, “if they let us in okay, if not we leave” was his favorite saying. You can believe there was never a cleaner vehicle than ones John owned. Once a visiting neighbor told John he had the best looking vehicles in the complex.

Those left to cherish John‘s Memory: His wife Patricia, son John Michael, daughter Shalonda Stephenson, grandsons Michael and Matthew Stephenson, sisters, Areva Walton Boyd and Ophelia Walton Roher, Aunt Beulah Caines, nieces, great-nieces, nephews, great-nephews, and cousins. “(Everyone was John’s cousin).”

A public viewing will be held Tuesday, December 15, 2020 from 4pm-6pm in the Cassie Coote-Brown Chapel of Perry J. Brown Funeral Home. A private chapel service will be held in the Cassie Coote-Brown Chapel of Perry J. Brown Funeral Home.
