Deacon Elgient Lowell Pritchett was born in Hampton, Virginia on June 12, 1934, to the late James and Florence Watts Pritchett. He entered into his eternal rest at Camden
Health and Rehabilitation Center on February 23, 2024.
At an early age, Deacon Pritchett accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at First Baptist Church in Hampton Virginia and became active in the youth programs of the church during his childhood years.
He received his formal education in the Hampton Public Schools and graduated high school from the George P. Phenix High School. Upon graduating, he attended North
Carolina Agricultural & Technical College, now North Carolina Agricultural Technical University. He later transferred to Winston Salem Teachers College, now Winston Salem State University. Shortly after enrolling at Winston Salem Teachers College, a young lady named Carrye Whitaker caught his eye. Unfortunately, Carrye had absolutely no interest in him. However, through perseverance and determination, he was able to win
her over.
Later, during his college years, he was drafted to the United States Army where he
proudly served as a Military Policeman at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. When he returned to Winston Salem Teachers College to complete his undergraduate studies, he
and Carrye continued their love for one another. As love never fails, on December 25,1960, he married his college sweetheart, Carrye Whitaker and a marriage was formed which covered a span of 63 years.
During his marriage to Carrye, it was not uncommon during the early years for him to be out of town playing his saxophone with the Blue Mooners. When playing with the band, his memory could be enhanced to play any tune whenever the person requesting a special tune put enough cash in the bell of his horn. While he loved his saxophone, he continued to love the military and served an additional 12 years in the Army National Guard.
Deacon Pritchett was the proud father of two children, Valencia Gayle Pritchett Williams and Jan Elliott Pritchett. He never missed an opportunity to let others know how proud he was of his family. When the family would tell him not to brag, he would always respond with one of his original quotes “Let he who has a horn toot it”
In his professional career, Deacon Pritchett furthered his academic studies and received a Master of Education in Administration and Supervision from Virginia State University. He left a lasting impact on generations of students during his career as a teacher and assistant principal that spanned over a period of 36 years. Just like his biological children and grandchildren, he was proud of so many of his former students.
Deacon Pritchett was a member of the National Association of Educators, the North Carolina Association of Educators, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., the Shriners and he was also a Prince Hall Mason where he was bestowed the 33rd Degree.
Twenty-one years ago, Deacon Elgient and Deaconess Carrye moved to Greensboro to be closer to family. Upon moving to Greensboro, they united with Providence Baptist Church where Deacon Pritchett was a faithful and active member until his health began to decline.
Preceding him in death were his grandparents; Charles and Ida Watts, parents; James and Florence Pritchett; siblings; Harold Pritchett, Sr. and Earl B. Pritchett, Sr.; son-in-law; Reverend James “Alexander” Williams, Sr.
He leaves to cherish his memory, a loving and dedicated wife Carrye Whitaker Pritchett, two children; Valencia Gayle Pritchett Williams, Randleman, NC, and Jan Elliott Pritchett (Wanda), Greensboro, NC; four grandchildren; James Alexander Williams, Jr. (Clara Brooke), Lexington, NC, Victoria Gabrielle Williams, Roanoke VA, Kailey
Elizabeth Pritchett and Ashley Frances Pritchett, Greensboro, NC, one brother-in-law: Joshua Whitaker; Chester PA; Four Nieces; Danita Allen (Jeffrey), Deborah Inman (Stanley), Cheryl Palmer, and Wanda Alston; Four Nephews; Earl Pritchett, Jr, Harold Pritchett, Jr, Hiram Pritchett, and Hamilton Pritchett, a neighbor and friend, Beverly Williams, who has been an angel to the family, three neighborly grandchildren; Siarrah, Jasmine Banks, and Mateo Holdsclaw (his little buddy), along with a host of relatives and friends.

Mr. Pritchett, was one of the finest men I have ever known. I met him during the time I was with "Toot-Toot" and the Blue Mooners. He was truly a sage to his family and all who came into contact with him. We connected partly because I was a student of Hampton Institute and he knew the Hampton story very well. I share your loss family. He was a great man and I miss him already. —— Rev. Louis G. Jones, Richmond, VA
I am sorry for your loss. I am praying for you and your family.

It goes without saying that Pritch was a great man. He left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He was a good example of how a man should conduct himself. He loved his wife, children, friends, raised his family, served God, served his country, gave back to his community, made beautiful music, had a unique sense of humor, and lived a fruitful life. He was a renaissance man. He was one of our closest friends. Our love and condolences to his wife Carrye, his children, and the rest of his family and friends. The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you; The Lord turn His face towards you and give you peace. Numbers 6: 24-26 Sam & Shirley Williams

Rest In Peace Mr. Pritchett 🕊
We honor the legacy of a man and mentor of so many when he taught me and others at Ralph J. Bunche in Weldon NC. We learned how to be respectful young men and with a level of firmness that is a lifetime learning. Mr. Pritchett was my sponsor and mentor in many things and especially in my journey into Masonry PHA at Lively Stone Lodge in Littleton NC. In addition, he taught football fundamentals in our 7th grade year even though we had no team. So many guys used that discipline to pay high school sports and landing scholarships. That's the man we loved and appreciated. Rest well Mr. Pritchett👊🏾🙏🏾💪🏾🎷🎵
Mrs. Pritchett and Family we are praying for your uplift and strength. God has called him from labor to reward and with knowledge we will see him again, everything will be alright. 🙏🏾❤️🙏🏾
Respectfully,
