I sent the recent condolence post that started "I am so sad about Vivian's passing..." before adding my name: Bruce Lynch.

The sweetest, funniest person ever I have ever met. I am devastated. Missing you badly Dr. Barnette. Praying for strength and comfort to the family. -Mercedes Florence

I am so sad about Vivian's passing. We knew each other for 20 years, starting as co-workers at the UNCG Counseling Center and continuing as fellow Directors and friends. Her dedication to helping students, the staff she supervised, and other Directors was impressive. Vivian's professional and personal support meant so much to me, and my thoughts and prayers are with her family.

Dean Family,

I was simply devastated to hear about Vivian's transition; I am still trying to process the thought of a world without her. Please know that the Quick Family is praying for your family.

My daughter Winnie and I will miss Vivian's beautiful smile, humor, wit, kindness and laughter. Over the years we enjoyed the vivaciousness of Vivian at our numerous outings, mostly at PrintWorks and Ruth's Chris; actually, we were contemplating our next Ruth's Chris visit.

Vivian invited Winnie and me to church service a few years ago. Not only did we enjoy worshipping with her and her church family, we had the added treat of eating lunch with her brother, sister-in-law and "Liz." Vivian had shared several "Liz" stories with us and we were thrilled to finally witness the wonderful interaction between Vivian and "mama."

Vivian and I served as the advisors for the Alpha Phi Chapter of AKA's on A&T's campus. The undergraduates benefitted from her wisdom, calmness, graciousness, and professionalism as did I. During our tenure as advisors, we created a scholarship fund to incentivize for "good" semester grades. Vivian was insistent on sharing the funding responsibilities; consequently, we personally funded several thousand dollars of awards. We joked about going broke funding those super smart ladies.

For several years, Dr. Vivian Barnette was an annual presenter in an accounting colloquium class that I taught. She looked forward to coming to the class, was disappointed the time she was unable to attend, and graciously sent a good substitute.

I will miss my colleague, friend, and soror. There is comfort in knowing that the angels are now appreciating the vivaciousness of Vivian.

HQ (Gwendolyn Highsmith-Quick)

Although Vivian and I were members of the same sorority for nearly 16 years, she was Dr. Barnette to me when she served as one of my graduate advisors and Barnette ever since I graduated. I never did call her by her first name - it was a quirk of mine she wholeheartedly embraced.

I am forever grateful to have lived knowing such a wonderful woman for nearly half my life. My deepest and sincerest condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and all she served with her entire heart; I love her dearly and miss her completely. In the quietest moments and the darkest time of night, I can still hear her laughing and hyping me up as only she could.

My mom and I will certainly go to a Ruth's Chris wine dinner in her honor, and I will smile bittersweetly as I drink Barnette's glasses for her (as I always did) in my thoughts and in her memory. I am a better woman for having her as my Soror and, more importantly, as my friend. Knowing her will always remain the honor of my life.

We are truly saddened by the news of Dr Barnette's death. Our prayers are with her family that they will know what a blessing she was to so many. J. Douglas

Sending condolences to the family. Vivian was a colleague and my grandfather the late Rev Lynn Baldwin was her pastor at Chapel Hill AMEZ (which she proudly shared with me). Rest well.

We are sending our sincere condolences and prayers to the family. Dr. Barnette was a well-respected friend and colleague during the time we worked together at A&T. When I was dealing with the challenges of life, I would often stop by her office for some "couch time". She would always make time for me and provide whatever support needed. Peace and blessings!!! Carl & Geissler Baker

I first met my sister in Christ when she came to do her internship at the nursing home I also worked at way back in the 80's. God sent me a special friend and we connected immediately. A fond memory from then was our lunch trips together especially to the steak house for their warm yeast rolls. We often said we should have just them for lunch! Over the years we've enjoyed many times together and God was always there to keep our spirits close. I will miss her greatly but she is rejoicing in Heaven. May God be close to her family she leaves behind. Barbara W.

Dr. Vivian Barnette,

Was a light 💡 to everyone around her. Always had an ever glowing smile 😊 and warm embrace. She was an exceptional person, woman of God, friend, and my FAVORITE VA Kernersville Therapist. I was blessed to know and be loved by her, for a little over a year! I will never forget our friendship, conversations, and therapeutic sessions. She will be beyond missed and always remembered in my family's hearts 🥰.

Thank you for the gift of you, you shared it well while here on earth. 🌍 my deepest condolences 💐 to the Barnette family' during this time. You all will be in our prayers and thoughts.

Blessings and Love always,

Veteran Angela M. Parks, James Parks, Gabriella Parks, Zaria Parks, & Zion Parks

Dr. Barnette was a member of my last class of admitted students as director of training for the doctoral program in counseling psychology at Western Michigan University. She quickly distinguished herself as an intentional and exceptional student with a keen since of humor. Her excellence as a student was matched by her work following graduation as a professional mental health clinician and administrator. In 2019, our department, the Department of Counselor Education & Counseling Psychology (CECP), awarded her its annual Outstanding Alumni Award in recognition of her post-doctoral work and achievements. We stayed in touch periodically over the years and she was always the same positive bright light trying to help others. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends. Dr. Joseph R. Morris, Professor Emeritus & Former Department Chair

On behalf of the members of Beta Iota Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. in Greensboro, NC, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of our beloved Soror, Dr. Vivian Barnette.

As a cherished Silver Star and Life Member, Soror Barnette exemplified unwavering dedication and service for over 25 years. Her legacy includes mentoring future leaders as a Campus Advisor to our undergraduate chapter at North Carolina A&T State University and passionately advocating for wellness as a member of our Mental Health Committee. Her wisdom, kindness, and commitment to excellence will remain etched in our hearts.

We will forever honor her memory and celebrate her extraordinary contributions to our sisterhood and community. May her soul rest in perfect peace.

To the Family of Dr. Vivian Barnette, Vivian was a loved colleague and friend. I will truly miss her. I Pray for comfort and peace as we remember times spent. She was a light for me and so many others. --Phyllis Ford-Booker

My heart goes out to Johnathan, Eric and all of the family. My days with the Dean family goes back to the days in Sanford. We were not only relatives but Tim and I were on the same basketball team. I spent many times around Eric as well but didn't know where Johnathan and Vivian were until I moved to this area and set under Bishop Hash and we reconnected. Small world. Vivian will be missed by all that knew her. She would find humor at the drop of a dime. We love you guys and will keep you in our prayers. We are here for you.

Vivian was a warm and caring person who spread love and laughter wherever she went. Her presence will be greatly felt by this family. Prayers of comfort, strength and peace during this difficult time. Love Tammy, Brandon, Dequon, Mark, Jeff, Derrick, EJ, Hannah

This is a poem I wrote for Vivian. Vivian and I worked together at the University of Oregon Counseling and Testing Center where we became friends. Dr. Barnette was an amazing person who had my deepest caring, trust and respect. We've stayed in touch for the last 20 years. Rhe highlight of each year was spending time together at our yearly psychology conference. Being around Viv's realness, wisdom humor and compassion would help heal the wounds of the year and help keep me on track and centered . Here is poem for her I wrote last night

Ode to Vivian

And God said, let there be light And there was light Not just from the sun But from all God's children.

Vivian heard his word And brought light into the world All her days In so many ways

The message she was sharing With honesty humor, and caring Guiding many from the darkness of night Into the clarity of mornings bright

Her candle burns bright Because the greatest light is love A brilliant sight From her, from us, from above

When I ask the spirit in the sky Why? Why? How will I live without Vivian near? I am answered "Love, despite fear"

Every day, every way Cherish the light she gave you Hold onto it dearly And share it with the rest of the world too

We, like Vivian, will live through the love we give others To all our sisters and brothers

My condolences and prayers to the family. She was a beloved member of the Lee County Senior High class of 1981. We salute you for your kindness and achievement. Take your well earned rest. Aggie Pride! Warren McNeill

Vivian, was a Phenomenal Woman and will truly be missed! She never met a stranger and always graced you with a beautiful smile. Rest easy Vivian we love you. Andre & Bridget Davis

My deepest condolences to the family! Dr. Barnette was my professor in the Counseling program at North Carolina A&T State University. She truly made my experience a remarkable one. We stayed in touch even after she left the University and she gave me words of encouragement just before I took my exam last May. She was a jewel. After I found out that I passed my test, I called her with the news. She congratulated me and always gave me great advice like she always did. I will miss her tremendously. I thank God for allowing her to be a part of my life.

Dr. Vivian Barnette was a colleague at North Carolina A&T State University, a co-member at St. Peter's Church and World Outreach Center and a dear friend.

As Director of Counselling Services at North Carolina A&T State University, she impacted the lives of many students. I knew when I referred students to her, they were in good hands. She was a great listener and the inner peace and calmness that was a part of her spirit had a way of impacting those she encountered. She was loved by students at A&T. And she was well known and respected by people in the field of psychology.

As a member of St. Peter's Church and World Outreach Center, we worked many Women Encounters together. I found her to be a woman of great wisdom. She was strong and established in her commitment to God and to St. Peter's. She demonstrated a desire to assist women in growing in their relationship with God.

As a dear friend, I enjoyed the many hours of conversations we had over the years. Vivian had amazing insight in so many arenas. She was just plain smart. She was adventurous. She was more than a talker, but she was a doer. She was a woman of great faith and motivated me in my faith. She had a unique laughter and great sense of humor. I will truly miss her.

My prayers are with her family. You were so blessed to have Vivian as a sister, aunt, great aunt, niece, and in-law. Know that she loved you deeply.

We, who are in Christ, are comforted to know that Vivian is not just in our 6past, but she is in our future. Sincerely, Shearon Brown

My heart is truly saddened at the death of Vivian whom I had known for most of her life. My family has deep roots in Chapel Hill AMEZ and had close ties to the Dean Family. My prayer for each of you is that you hold on to your memores of her and know that when you're holding her close, she's reeaching back. With prayers, ValaRay J Irvin (Soror-friend)

After several days of fasting and praying, I have endeavor to articulate the profound impact Dr. Barnett had on my Life and the lives of countless veterans she serve. Despite the challenges of building trust and garnering support within the veterans administration, Dr. Barnett's unwavering commitment and dedication to her veterans earned her their own wavering trust. Doing a particularly difficult period n my life, Dr. Burnett became my counselor. Her steadfast, commitment, and unwavering dedication to me as a veteran, coupled with her deep connection as a sister in Christ, enabled me to confront the years of abuse I had endured and the trauma I had experienced doing my military service. Her council became wise and profound, and I found myself compelled to adhere to her advice as it aligned with my calling and commitment to my faith. I was deeply saddened to learn of Dr. Barnett's passing only 15 minutes before our most recent scheduled appointment. The news struck me with such force that it has taken me several days to express my thoughts in writing. Even with this recent revelation, I could compose a book that would honor her legacy. As Jesus healed the 10 lepers, only one return to express gratitude. To Dr. Barnett's family I extend my heartfelt appreciation and urge them to allow me to be the one to express my gratitude on behalf of all the many veterans she serve so diligently. In the military, we show respect by taking a knee when one of our own falls. To Dr. Barnett, I ended each of our appointments by simply saying thank you. This time, however I also bow my head in deep respect as I take a knee! Rev. Dr. Richard W. Gray, II
