Joyce Simpson was born on August 28, 1943, to Willie Len and Lucille Simpson (Jackson) in Albany, GA. She graduated from Monroe High School in 1960 and continued her education at Albany State College, earning a Bachelor’s degree in nursing.
Gentle and soft-spoken, Joyce had a deep passion for caring for others, especially the elderly. This passion led her to obtain a Master’s degree in gerontological nursing from the University of California, San Francisco. She held various positions in the VA hospital system, ultimately retiring as the Director of Nursing for the VA Nursing Home in Menlo Park, CA.
During her time in California, she also served in the Army Reserves, retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Joyce returned to Albany to care for her mother and embarked on a second career teaching nursing at Albany Technical College while also volunteering at the Albany Senior Center. She was also an active member of the Emmanuel SDA Church.
An avid reader and traveler, Joyce’s greatest joy came from her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Casley; sisters, Deloris Harvey, Juanita Banks, Geneva Simpson, and Barbara Simpson; brother, Robert Simpson; nephew, Rochester Butler, Jr.; and nieces, Joyce Simpson, Deborah Lewis, and Gwen Harvey.
She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Breed (Paul); grandchildren, Brandon Sturdivant, Paul Jr., and Priya Breed; beloved sister, Doris Cheeks; devoted nieces, Felicia Cheeks, Jeanette Jackson, and Valerie Kellings; nephews, Elvis and Roderick Simpson, Clifford Jr., Robert, and Ricardo Banks, and Danny and Albert Harvey; devoted cousin, Vivian Jackson; and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends.
Her life was a living example of Ephesians 4:32, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.”
Meadows Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Sending my sympathies and prayers to Doris and Family. Joyce was a kind and sweet person. She will forever be missed. I will keep the family in my prayers during this difficult time. Sincerely, Margie Ford.
I remember my Aunt Joyce as a gentle, kind, soft-spoken woman. I was a child in the early 1970's and recall everyone being so very excited each spring/summer when Uncle Sammie and Aunt Joyce came to South Carolina for a visit. They were the "cool" young couple from Cali:)! As a child, I remember saying "Uncle Sammie and Aunt Joyce" as if the two were one person. While attending a military course in Augusta, GA, many decades later, one of my instructors told me that she was friends with Aunt Joyce and informed me that she was a member of the Army Nurse Corps. Cynthia ("Cindy"), you are family and are and will always be loved. I pray that God keeps you and everyone who knew and were blessed to know Aunt Joyce in perfect peace.
Much Love,
LTC Gail Casley-Sawyer and family
