Martha Mae (Houston) McClendon was born to the late Roosevelt Houston Sr. and Catherine Watson in Richland, Georgia. She relocated from Georgia to Steelton, Pennsylvania in 1949, where she resided until 1975 when she purchased a home in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. On March 22, 2025, at the age of 94, Martha transitioned peacefully in that exact house she called home and created memories in for the last 50 years.
Known for her quiet strength and gentle demeanor, Martha carried a presence that commanded respect without ever raising her voice. She found her greatest joy in the love of her family, especially her grand, great-, and great-great-grandchildren, who were often nestled in her arms as she sat peacefully on her front porch. A gifted cook and a nurturer at heart, she took pride in feeding those she loved, always making sure no one left her home hungry. She loved and found peace in tending to her garden and taking care of her plants, nurturing each bloom with the same warmth she showed to those around her. Her days were often filled with visits to the Broad Street Market and the thrill of discovering treasures at yard sales, where she found beauty in the simple things.
Martha was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses on January 2, 1982, and attended the Swatara Congregation. She was a hard-working and dedicated woman who retired from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on December 27, 1991, allowing her more time to cherish and enjoy her family.
In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Robert McClendon Jr.; her brother, Roosevelt Greene Houston Jr.; her sons, Don E. McClendon and James E. McClendon; daughters-in-law, Rosalee Johnson McClendon and Tina M. McClendon; her grandchild, Taraja Williams and her great-grandchildren, Exie Jameson Jr. and Zyaire McClendon.
She is survived by her daughters, Nancy L. McClendon, Margarette McClendon, and Darlene D. McClendon, all of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; her sons, Robert McClendon III (Patricia) and Orville V. McClendon of Steelton, Pennsylvania; Thomas T. McClendon of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and her step-son, Dana Burnett of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Martha also leaves behind 19 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, 25 great-great-grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
Martha's life will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 1, 2025 in the Chapel of the Major H. Winfield Funeral Home, Steelton with viewing and visitation from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. and burial in William Howard Day Cemetery.
