UPCOMING SERVICE Viewing Sep, 21 2021 10:00a.m. - 11:00a.m. Major H. Winfield Funeral Home
GEORGE ALAN BRAXTON, the son of the late Bessie B. Braxton the late William Alfred Grigsby, was born on Sunday, October 5, 1941 at the Harrisburg Hospital in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
He received his formal education in the Harrisburg Public School District and was a graduate of the former William Penn High School.
George pursued a career at IBM and retired with more than 30 years of faithful service. While working for IBM, he received their most coveted award, the IBM Means Service Award, rewarding him for his dedication to teamwork, commitment to excellence and employee accomplishments.
George’s career did not stop him from pursuing the love of his life. He “wooed” Juanita Grier, captured her heart and they were united in Holy Matrimony on December 16, 1972. Together in marriage for over 48 years, they reared a family of four, nurturing them with lots of love, laughter, structure and the word of God. He was a man of committed faith, who led by example, showing his children how a godly father and husband should abide in the home, work in the church and become a community asset.
For many years, George was an active Deacon serving at The Greater Zion Missionary Baptist church. He continued to serve the Lord at Christian Fellowship and Covenant Community Church. George was called upon for his ability to pray, comfort and uplift the people of God. He loved reading the Bible and teaching Bible school classes. He wore an irresistible smile and carried a contagious laughter that soothed many hurting hearts and led many to Christ. Joy radiated from George Alan Braxton and infected all those that knew him.
He was an exceedingly humorous man, issuing out lots of witty digs to those he loved. Basketball and football were his pastime sports, with the Steelers being his favorite team. In his leisure, he enjoyed eating, doting on his grandchildren, watching movies especially westerns and the animal channel. He especially enjoined learning about his favorite animal, the lion. He loved to travel and made sure yearly family vacations with children and grandchildren were in the budget and taken. But mostly, George loved Juanita his wife and was rarely ever without her at his side!
On Sunday, September 12, 2021 at the age of 79 years, 11 months and 8 days, George peacefully transitioned this life at home, with Juanita and family members by his side. An only child, he was preceded in death by his parents and leaves to celebrate his life, his wife, Juanita Braxton; his children: Wendy Hawkins (Winston), Robin Hanna, Shawn Hanna and Tameka Braxton; his eleven grandchildren; his eleven great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members and friends.
To know George was to know love and experience lots of laughter. He loved his friends and family abundantly. His laughter will be greatly missed; but we know that it is being heard in the hallways of heaven as it echoes always in our hearts.
His life will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Major H. Winfield Funeral Home, Steelton with viewing and visitation from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. and burial in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
