Obituary For Randel Lee "Hoot" Houghtaling

Randel Lee “Hoot” Houghtaling, 91, passed away peacefully at his home in Cuchillo Creek on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, surrounded by his wife, daughter, granddaughter, and son. He was born on December 10, 1932, to William L. Houghtaling and Bethel Barker in Lawrenceville, Illinois.

He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1950 and served a four year term, stationed in Iceland for one year, then returning to States to complete his service. Also serving in the National Guard in Iowa and Illinois. He was an ammo bearer and a vehicle mechanic during that time. Hoot got his nickname in the service, as his name was mispronounced so many times, that it was easier to just say “Hoot”. That stuck and he’s been Hoot ever since.

Hoot was a millwright by profession and was in constant demand for a precision setter on heavy turbines and equipment. He traveled all over the United States setting and constructing the missile silos on the Air Force bases. He was a lifetime member of the Las Cruces Elks Lodge #1119. Hoot loved building homes and built three in Las Cruces and one in Cuchillo Creek for his mother-in-law. He liked bowling, golfing, fishing, hunting, dancing, and going to Casinos. He spent the summers taking the grandkids on trips to the different states to show them historical sites and National Parks. Hoot was a one of kind guy, always busy and willing to help anyone. He made friends young and old no matter where he went. He will be greatly missed.

Hoot is survived by his wife, Ellen, of the family home; two daughters – Peggy Houghtaling of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Erica Sailley and husband, Travis, of Rio Rancho, NM; a son, Jimmy Brady of Truth or Consequences, NM; and his grandchildren that he loved and cherished so much: Cortney Armijo and Luis of Williamsburg, NM, Brooklyn Sailley of Rio Rancho, NM, Logan Sailley of Albuquerque, NM, and Gage Sailley of Washington State. Also surviving are his brother, George Leighty and wife, Rosie, of McLeansboro, Illinois; and lots of nieces and nephews, all of which he had a special place for in his heart.

Hoot didn’t want any services, and we will comply with his wishes. “Rest in Peace Darlin’, we love you.”
