David Christopher Kunz “Doc”, 69, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2024, with his family by his side in Cutter, NM, after an extended battle with cancer. He was born on October 11, 1954, to John Christian and Wilhelmina Juliana (Kamilli) Kunz in Alliance, Ohio. David spent his youth around a large group of family and friends and went to Mount Union College to start his education towards a path in medicine. He married Janet (Gwynne) Kunz on March 7, 1985. He completed his doctorate on June 2, 1994, from the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences in Des Moines, Iowa. Medicine was the perfect career choice for David, as he was never one to turn down a request for help, both inside and outside the doctors’ office; treating patients, family and associates with honesty and respect, which would make him a great many friends in every place he worked during his life. David lived in many places, travelling all over the US, and finally settling down permanently in southern New Mexico, where he worked until retirement, spending his remaining years with family and close friends.
A mover and a shaker, David enjoyed being outside and working with his hands. In his free time, when not out in the workshop, planning a project, in the dirt, digging and building something, or under the hood of one of the family cars, David enjoyed bike rides, camping and hiking with family and friends and four-wheeling out in the desert and mountains.
David was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: John William Kunz and Edmund Earl Kunz, and sister, Martha Magdalene Crouse.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Janet Carol Kunz; children: Julianna Mae Kunz, Christopher Thomas Kunz, and stepdaughter, Sarah Marie (Kline) Cerra and her husband John; grandsons: Ryne Alexander, Jody Parker and Edison Marshall Cerra of Alamogordo, NM; and brother, Richard Erwin Kunz and wife, Laura Plath of Poulsbo, WA.
The family invites all to come celebrate David's life on Tuesday, January 23, 2024 from 4:00 P.M. – 6:00 P.M. at Kirikos Family Funeral Home. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Doc’s name to the UNM Cancer Center by visiting https://unmhealth.org/give/ .
