Virgil M. Hardin II, transitioned peacefully on Monday, February 13, 2023, in Bethlehem, PA. Virgil was born in New Orleans on February 13, 1955, and was a former longtime resident of Cincinnati, OH. He began traveling with his military family in 1960 until he joined the Navy in 1972.
Virgil was assigned to the nuclear submarine training program, but transitioned to electronics, a field he loved and excelled in. He proudly served on the USS Coral Sea and the USS Spruance during the Vietnam war. After six years in the Navy, Virgil went into pre-med at the University of Washington State for two years with nearly a perfect SAT score and perfect grades. He settled in Cincinnati, OH where he and a partner started their own technical company, HVS Systems. He worked for the Navy as a consultant in Cincinnati on government projects. He thrived on making things work that required autonomy and the intricacies using his level of expertise.

The above message was from Joel LaRose, former HM2, USS Spruance DD963. elarose1@comcast.net
A mutual friend and shipmate of ours shared with me the sad news of Virgil's passing. We only discovered this recently because of one more search for a friend and shipmate from long ago when we were all quite a bit younger (1977-1979). I last saw Virgil in April of 78 when Iwasleaving the Spruance and the Navy, and last spoke with him via telepbone that same year after he got out of the Navy. We served together aboard USS Spruance at a time when our only war was a cold one with the Soviets. He was a good friend and shipmate and always quick to laugh. I don't recall ever seeing him angry at all. Another 2 friends of mine, Oliver Spooner and Paul Morton, had the pleasure of meeting his folks in Allentown PA sometime in 1977. I remember having a nice conversation with his Dad about my Navy job on Spruance as a Hospital Corpsman. Time has passed all too quickly. This sad news and the manner of receiving it are testaments to that. I'm only sorry to not have been able to stay in touch with him, but it is what it is. I wish him well on his journey and pray that he is at peace. My most heartfelt condolences to his Father and family, too. May God bless,Virgil and his entire family.
