With profound sadness and abiding gratitude for a life well-lived, we celebrate the homegoing of Virgil B. Williams, a devoted husband, father, brother, musician, and esteemed medical professional. Born on March 1, 1963, at Eisenhower Hospital in Fort Gordon, Georgia, to Berry J. Williams and Lillie (Roberson) Williams, Virgil was raised in the vibrant post-military family community of Terrace Manor, Belle Meade in Augusta, Georgia. His formative years were marked by a deep sense of purpose, academic excellence, and an unwavering love for music.
A proud graduate of Glenn Hills High School (Class of 1981) in Augusta, Georgia, Virgil’s pursuit of higher education led him to Morehouse College, San Francisco State University, and ultimately to The Medical College of Georgia, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Medicine in 1987. His passion for healing and scientific inquiry fueled a distinguished career spanning nearly four decades. Virgil dedicated 20 years of service at Grady Hospital, rising to the esteemed position of Director of the Nuclear Medicine Program. His leadership and expertise continued at Atlanta Medical Center, where he served with distinction for another 17 years, including 15 years as Director. Through his work, Virgil touched countless lives, blending technical mastery with compassionate patient care.
While medicine was his profession, music was his soul. Rooted in four generations of pastoral leadership, Virgil was steeped in the spiritual and musical traditions of his faith. From an early age, he showcased extraordinary musical talents playing the trombone, mastering the piano, and lending his powerful voice to the choirs of Broadway Baptist Church. His love for both Gospel and rhythm & blues propelled him beyond the church walls, leading him to form and lead his own bands, and even tour with legends such as B.B. King and James Brown. However, his heart ultimately belonged to the Gospel music genre, and he left the blues circuit to devote himself entirely to Christian music. A prolific songwriter, Virgil penned over 400 gospel songs, many of which continue to uplift and inspire. His voice, recordings, and compositions will forever echo as a testament to his unwavering faith and artistic brilliance.
In 1996, the union of Virgil and Christina was blessed with three wonderful children: IsaacWilliams (Brea), Phillip Williams, and CharityWilliams, while his eldest daughter, Faith Williams, remained a cherished part of his life. Virgil was a dedicated father, always present, always encouraging, always ensuring that his children knew the depth of his love.
Virgil’s passing leaves a profound void, yet his legacy of excellence, faith, and melody endures. He is survived by his children Faith, Isaac, Phillip, and Charity, and his siblings Curtis E. Williams (Elaine), Berry Jay Williams, and Philanna (Williams) Peterson. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, colleagues, and friends who were enriched by his kindness, wisdom, and passion.
As we gather to celebrate his extraordinary life, we take comfort in the words of the Psalmist: Sing to the Lord a new song, for He has done marvelous things. Psalm 98:1
Though his voice has been silenced in this world, it now joins the heavenly choir, where his song will never end.
A visitation will be held Monday, February 17, 2025 from 12:00 noon until the hour of service at the church.
A Celebration of Life will begin at 1:00 p.m. Broadway Baptist Church.
Interment will be in Mount Olive Memorial Gardens.
Kinsey & Walton Funeral Home, 3618 Peach Orchard Road, Augusta, Georgia 30906 (706)790-8858.
