On Friday, September 13th, April Allen Weldon passed suddenly at home. She was born on April 8, 1969, in Cincinnati, Ohio as the only child of Niathan and Emma Allen.
Her early childhood education began at Bethany Episcopal School in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her middle and high school years were spent at Brooklyn Friends and the McBurney School, both in New York, New York. She attended Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio where she received her undergraduate degree in Sociology. While there she was an active member of the Pi Gamma Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She did her Masters work in Sociology at Clark Atlanta University She met her husband, Christopher O. Weldon, while they were both graduate assistants in the Sociology department. April’s professional life has centered around children and the development and empowerment of youth. After leaving Ohio Wesleyan University she began Work at the Harbor for Boys and Girls in New York, New York as a case manager for TASA, a program to support pregnant and parenting teens.
After leaving Clark Atlanta University, she worked at the YWCA of Greater Atlanta and later at the United Way of Greater Atlanta. The birth of her two children greatly impact her professional career. She became Director of the Childcare Center at Central United Methodist Church (Atlanta, Georgia) to be able to spend more time with her children. After relocating to Clinton, South Carolina, she was employed by Presbyterian College as Assistant Director of Communities Helping, Assisting, and Motivating Promising Students (CHAMPS). She was later employed by the Laurens School District as Director of their LINKS 21st Century Learning Center.
After relocating to the Augusta area, she served as the Senior Fund Development Manager for Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia. After leaving this position, she continued to volunteer with Girl Scout Troop 27268 until her recent passing. Her love of youth and the arts allowed her to later become Executive Director of the Augusta Performing Arts Center.
In November 2018, she founded Melanin Magic, which was later renamed to Girlocity, as an organization whose goal is to equip middle and high school girls with the tools to break systemic racism, sexism, and xenophobia barriers to improve their social environment through academic success, leadership, life skills, and community involvement.
April was confirmed in the Episcopal faith in 1978 at the Church of Our Savior, Cincinnati Ohio. She has been a member of Central United Methodist Church (Atlanta, GA), Friendship AME Church (Clinton, SC), and Mosaic United Methodist Church (Evans, GA). Her strong sense of faith and love of God led her to join Tabernacle Baptist Church in 2022. She was also an active member of the Alpha Alpha Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpa Kappa Alpha, Inc.
Although April is physically gone, her love, kindness, and gentle spirit live on. She is survived by her husband, (Christopher O.), daughter (Alexandra), son (Christopher A.), mother (Emma M. Allen), and a host of in-laws, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Dr. Niathan.
Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be 4:00 pm, Saturday, September 21, 2024, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 1223 Laney Walker Blvd. Eulogist, Reverend Dr. Charles E. Goodman, Jr.
