SPARTANBURG, SC-- Ms. Monaree Yvette Davis, of 4 Lynwood Drive, formerly of Virginia Beach, VA, entered rest on Sunday, May 13, 2012. Born November 6, 1952 in Spartanburg, SC, she was the daughter of Mrs. Marie Davis Moore and the late Willie Edward Davis, Sr. Ms. Davis was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She was a 1971 graduate of Spartanburg High School and received a BS degree in Biology from Voorhees College in 1975. She attended the University of South Carolina, with thirty hours toward a master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling. She enlisted in the United States Navy on April 24, 1981. After completion of recruit training in Orlando, Florida she reported to her first ship, USS Canopus (AS-34) on August 19, 1981, HP: Charleston, South Carolina. During her sea tour, she was a PN striker during OJT in the Personnel Office when she advanced to Petty Officer Third Class in March 1982. She transferred in November 1984 to Personnel Support Activity Detachment NTC Orlando, Florida. During her tour there she worked hard as a legal clerk and an educational office clerk, who worked closely with the Naval Nuclear Power School. She advanced to Petty Officer Second Class in September 1985. Her next tour of duty was Patrol Squadron Fifty-Six HP: Jacksonville, Florida. She made two deployments, Naval Air Station, Sigonella, Sicily and US Naval Air Station, Keflavik, Iceland. While attached to this command, she was part of her decommissioning in June 1991. She reported on board Personnel Support Activity Detachment Submarines NAVSTA Norfolk, Virginia in August 1991. The command provided service to 12 Fast Attack Submarines. In March 1995, she transferred to Personnel Support Activity Detachment Guantanamo Bay Cuba. This was during the Haitian and Cuban conflict, the homeport change of Fleet Training Group and the disestablishment of Shore Intermediate Maintenance Activity. From there she transferred to Personnel Support Activity Detachment NAVSTA Norfolk, Virginia, where she was promoted to Petty Officer First Class and served as the Leading Petty Officer in the transfer's section where she was the recognized expert in the processing of Naval Veterans returning to active duty. Her last tour of duty was onboard SS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN-69) as the leading Petty Officer for the Educational Service Office and as the leading Petty Officer for the transfer section. Her awards include: the Navy/Marine Achievement Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation w/2 bronze stars, US. Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation, Battle "E" Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal w/5 Bronze stars, National Defense Service medal w/1 bronze star, Humanitarian Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon w/2 bronze stars, Navy Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon, US. Coast Guard Special Operations Service Ribbon, Navy Rifle Marksmanship, Navy Pistol Marksmanship. After 22 years of loyal and dedicated service she retired on April 30, 2003. Surviving in addition to her mother, is one sister, Denise Davis Smith of Spartanburg, SC; three brothers, Ibrahim Hanif, Sharone Luvar Davis, Sr. and Dennis Marvin Davis, Sr. (Twelvia) of Spartanburg, SC; a special friend, Faithe White of Detroit, MI; her beloved canine, Samantha Davis; a special niece, Dr. Vashonia Smith Campbell (BeAsker) of Snellville, GA, a special great-niece, Mackenzie Tra'Nyiah Littlejohn; a special nephew, William Smith III; three aunts, Letha Davis Brown, Lucy Davis Steen, and Mae Davis all of Spartanburg, SC; one great-aunt, Louise Black Cherry (Robert) of Mooresville, NC; and a host of nieces and nephews. The family is receiving friends at the home of her sister, Denise Smith, 501 Dodd Lane, Bondale Subdivision.
