Mrs. Mary Alice Riser Wood was born on April 6, 1941 to the late Will and Malon Riser. She attended school at Florence Chapel. As a little girl she was baptized and became a member of Upper Shady Grove Baptist Church where she attend until she married the late Deacon John Singfield Sr. At that time she joined Lower Shady Grove Baptist Church in Woodruff, SC where she served faithfully as the President of the Alexander Gospel Choirs for many years. Later in life, she came back and rejoined her home church, Upper Shady Grove Baptist Church where she served faithfully as the President of the Senior Choir, President of the Hospitality, Deaconess, and member of the Gospel Choir for many years until her failing health. She was a member of the Prince Hall Grand Chapter Eastern Star with dedicated service to the Silver Leaf Chapter #150 for over 50 years. She retired from Spartanburg County School District Six after more than 25 years of service.
She leaves fond memories of her dedicated and faithful husband, Deacon James Wood of the home and in their union they shared three sons, John (Lacharn) Singfield of Spartanburg, SC, Kevin (Jackie) Wood of Boiling Springs, SC, and Allen Wood of Landrum, SC. Two daughters, Cheryl (Toney) Singfield-Ashmore of Spartanuburg, SC, and Sandra (Ray) Evans of Accokeek, MD. Granchildren, Iman Titus, Zakiya Hillstock, Makahla McCollum, Zack Hillstock Jr., Dalanea Gates, Jalen Hillstock, Andrew Carson, Tyler Evans, Jacob Wood, Madison Wood, and De’Vante Land. Her only remaining sibling, Ms. Annie Mae Harris. Her special nieces and caregivers, Karen Whiteside, Shirley Miller, Evelyn Salami., and Tonya Whiteside-Jenkins. Adopted daughter and caregiver Evelyn Santana. A host of nieces and nephews.. She was preceded in death by her first husband,, Deacon John Singfield Sr., second husband,, Eddie Wallace, sisters,,Hattie Walker, Jessie Thompson, Annie Dillard, Ella Gist, Estella Riser, Elwillie Glenn, Mary Whiteside, and Lottie Bell Riser, brothers, J.. B.. Riser, J. W. Riser, Wilbert Riser, James Riser, and R.. D. Riser Bennett
Graveside Services will be held on Wednesday, October 2, 2024 at 1:00 pm in the Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Greer, SC.

I never had the pleasure to meet "Big Mama" but I heard so much about her that I feel like I knew her.
