Dr. Gerald Dean Dawkins May 9, 1949 - June 24, 2021
Dr. Gerald Dean Dawkins was born May 9, 1949 in Spartanburg, SC to Thomas Dawkins, Sr. and Ella Dawkins. He transitioned June 24, 2021.
Dr. Dawkins was a lifelong educator, changing the lives of countless. In 1973, Dawkins moved to Grand Rapids and began his career. He eventually joined the administration and served as Building Director, Coordinator, Assistant Director, Assistant Superintendent and ultimately, as Chief of Staff for the district.
In 2001, Dr. Dawkins became superintendent of the 18,000- students of Saginaw Michigan Public Schools, where he served for seven years. In 2008, he was named superintendent of the 45,000- student Caddo Parish Schools in Shreveport, LA, where he served for five years. Under his leadership, both districts experienced increased academic growth, increased graduation rates, and financial stability.
After retiring from superintendency, Dr. Dawkins became Senior Vice President of Superintendent and District Relations with Virginia- based K12 Insight, a technology company and leadership consultancy dedicated to improving school and community engagement.
Dr. Dawkins received a Bachelor's from Knoxville College, Master's from Western Michigan University, and his Doctorate from Wayne State University.
Family meant everything to Gerald. He was happily married to Gwen Dawkins for 49 years and was proud of his two lovely daughters. Kanika Bledsoe (Michael) and Kamira Dawkins; they enriched his life immensely. Adding to his joy was his granddaughter, Kadence and grandson, Karter. Along with his immediate family, Gerald leaves to mourn his brothers, Bobby Dawkins (Jeannette), Thomas Dawkins (Rita) and a sister, Loretta Dawkins.
