Cynthia Bonita Shelton took her wings and said I am Free, Praise The Lord I’m free and went home to be with the Lord on May 10, 2024. Bonnie, which most people knew her as, was born on March 3,1951 in Spartanburg, South Carolina to the late Annie Mildred Shelton and the late Waddell Pearson. She was a member of the Bountiful Blessings Church.
Bonnie graduated with the Carver High School Class of 1969. After graduating from Carver, she pursued her associates degree from Spartanburg Technical Community College as a Lab Technician and later returned there to get her Medical Lab Technician degree as well.
The degree in the medical field afforded her the opportunity to work at the Spartanburg Regional Medical Center as a Lab Technician for her first job. After gaining some valuable work experience; she then took a position as the Lab Supervisor at Doctors Memorial Hospital and worked there for over 20 years; until they closed their doors in 1994. She was known at the hospital for being able to get “blood out of a turnip”; which obviously couldn’t be done. This ultimately translated into her being known for being the best phlebotomist in the whole entire hospital and it was understood that if the vein couldn’t be found; or was hard to find, then we needed to call and get Bonnie on the scene. In addition to working at Doctors Memorial, she also worked for the Spartanburg Blood Bank as a phlebotomist on a part time basis. After much success in her role with Doctors Memorial Hospital, she took a Lab position with the Cancer Center in Greenville, SC and later transferred to the Cancer Center at Mary Black Hospital where she retired in 2008.
In addition to her professional pursuits, Bonnie always had a desire to please God. As a result, she consistently labored before the Lord and was blessed to be ordained as an Elder in 2000. As she continued to fight the good fight of Faith, it was always so amazing to see and hear the excitement she would exude when you would spend time with her in song and in the word. No matter the song or the scripture; if you start it, she would always chime in and finish it with you. She faithfully served in her Elder capacity with the Bountiful Blessings Church ministry until she was no longer able to do so. We as family truly believe that her departing message to all of us would have been to live by and lean on the words of Psalm 91; which was her favorite scripture.
Left to cherish fond memories are: her caretaker and sister, Darlene Haywood of Spartanburg, SC; her daughter, LaJuan (Torrey) Mills of Spring Lake, NC; and a host of God Children, cousins and many friends.
As we continue to celebrate and remember the life of Bonnie, she will be dearly missed by her family, extended family, friends, co-workers, and the 1969 Class of Carver High School.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at 12:00 noon at Bountiful Blessings Church, Roebuck, SC. Burial will be in the Lincoln Memorial Gardens, Drayton, SC.
