With most sincere sympathy, we formally announce the passing of Deaconess Mary Lee Hunter, who transition from this life on Monday, July 17, 2023,
Mrs. Mary Lee Scurry Hunter, daughter of Issac Scurry, Sr., and Dessie E. Scurry Mercer was born in Mitchell County, Georgia, on September 27, 1935. She transitioned from labor to reward on Monday, July 17, 2023, in North Port, Florida. Mrs. Hunter attended the public schools of Mitchell County. At an early age, Mrs. Hunter confessed to Christ and joined Friendship Baptist Church in Camilla, Georgia. After relocating to Grady County, she joined Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church. Later, she moved her membership to Travelers Rest Missionary Baptist Church, where she served faithfully in many capacities until her health failed. She was a deaconess and a past member of St. Thomas Lodge #37 of the Order of the Eastern Star for many years. She was also a dedicated wife and loving mother.
Miss Mary Lee Scurry entered into holy matrimony to Mr. Willie James Hunter on December 15, 1950. Mr. Hunter preceded her in death on March 15, 2018. To this union, seven children were born,
two of which preceded her in death, Mr. Bonnie L Hunter and Mrs. Verna A. Hunter Williams.
Mrs. Hunter leaves to cherish her memories: her two sons, Mr. Lonnie J. Hunter (Barbara) of Albany, Georgia, and Mr. Curtis D. Hunter (Stephanie) of Smyrna, Georgia; three daughters, Mrs. Retha M. Byrd (Ret. SSG. Leon) of North Port, Florida, Dr. Mirrial J. Moses (Timothy) of Hephzibah, Georgia, Mrs. Janet D. Stevens (Ret. COL. Wayne) of Columbus, Georgia; son-in-law, Mr. Larry Williams of Cairo, Georgia; ten grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; brother, Mr. Issac Scurry, Jr., (Ann) of Delray Beach, Florida; two brothers-in-law, Dr. Curtis T.L. Hunter (Georgia) of Ellerslie, Georgia, and Dr. Lorenzo Hunter of Wilmington, Ohio; six sisters-in-law, Mrs. Mary A. Hunter and Mrs. Willa D. Hunter, both of Whigham, Georgia, Mrs. Emma J. Hunter and Mrs. Jahazel Shepherd, both of Albany, Georgia, Mrs. Narrest Gadson of Tallahassee, Florida, and Mrs. Rose E. McRae (Dr. Sylvester) of Columbus, Georgia; and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives, and friends.
