With heavy hearts, the Smith Family announces the passing of their beloved father and brother, Keith Smith, who journeyed into eternal rest on January 19, 2025, one week shy of his 59th birthday. Born in Youngstown, Ohio, on January 26, 1966, Keith brought laughter, warmth, and joy to everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Keith was a proud son of Youngstown, a talented athlete who showcased his spirit on the football field during his high school years at East High, as a Golden Bear, before moving on to Ohio University in 1984.
A devoted Steelers fan, he wore his team's colors with pride, embodying the heart of a true fan through thick and thin. He was not just a driver in the medical transportation industry at the Detroit Medical Center; he was a guardian of goodwill, always ready to share a smile or a clever joke, reminding all of the importance of laughter. He embraced every moment with a heart full of love, a cigar in hand, and a mischievous prank always just around the corner—a testament to his belief that life was meant to be celebrated
In Keith’s world, no one was a stranger, only friends he had yet to meet. He had a remarkable ability to forge connections, leaving a lasting impression on all he encountered. Keith's journey took him from the vibrant streets of Detroit to the serene landscapes of West Virginia, ultimately guiding him back to his roots in Youngstown. Throughout his travels, his heart never wavered from the values instilled in him by his beloved hometown.
Family was Keith’s greatest treasure. He leaves behind his cherished son, Lamar Smith, and a loving family that includes his sisters Kimberly Ann Howard, Lecolia Morrissette, Jeannie Marie (JB) Drummond, Ottilie Smith, along with his brothers John Henry (Mona) Purifoy, Donald (Linda) Wallace, and James Kenneth Smith.
Never alone, even in death, Keith was embraced by his parents Jimmie Smith and Rev. Willie Mae Minor as he crossed the celestial shores.
We invite friends and family to join us in celebrating Keith’s life and legacy at a memorial service to be held in the chapel J.E. Washington Funeral Home in Youngstown on February 8, 2025, at 10:00 AM Rev. Lewis Macklin officiating.
Let’s gather to reminisce, to laugh, and to honor the beautiful spirit that was Keith Smith. To know him was to love him, and though he may have left this earthly realm, his spirit will forever echo in our hearts and the laughter we share.
At this time of intimate need and personal loss, the beloved family Keith Smith elected to entrust the Ministry of Comfort & Care, along with Transitional After-Care Arrangements to the J. E. Washington Funeral Services, 2234 Glenwood Ave., Youngstown OH 330.782.8500.
