Obituary For Marguerite Walker

All services were private. Please keep the family in your prayer

Marguerite Dolores Walker was born in Newark, NJ on September 20, 1933, to Albert Wilson and Rachel Ann Lassiter Wilson. She was the middle daughter of three girls: Lillian Stroud (deceased) and Marilyn “Bobbi” Day Weaver-El (deceased). She attended Charlton Street School and graduated from West Side High School with honors in 1950.

In 1952, Marguerite was united in marriage to Clarence “Johnny” Walker. They lovingly had four children: Steven (deceased), Cheryl, Elene, and David. Marguerite was a lifelong member of Metropolitan Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey.

Marguerite was employed by NJ Bell Telephone Company in Newark, NJ which later became Bell Atlantic in 1984. For several years, she was Shop Steward for her local Union at NJ Bell Telephone Company. Marguerite strongly believed in the fair and just treatment of workers in the workplace. After 18 years of employment, she retired in 1986. Marguerite, due to her industrious nature, continued working for several companies after her initial retirement: as office manager at Elite Construction in East Orange, NJ, International Recruiter at Seven Seas International located in the Gateway Building downtown Newark, NJ, and as a clerk at Sterns in West Orange, NJ where she enjoyed helping people make their fashion selections.

Marguerite loved and cherished her family and friends. She was always available when one was in need. Over time she was affectionately called “Ma Walker.” She had a high sense of fashion, liked to dance on occasion and enjoyed smooth jazz music. Marguerite enjoyed traveling and visited several countries within the Caribbean Sea. Although she was kind and gentle, she was firm in her religious beliefs and principles and didn’t yield them to anyone. Like her mother, who she admired all the days of her life, both women were graceful as hummingbirds, yet as firm as the Rock of Gibraltar.

On July 7, 2024, Marguerite peacefully passed away in her home with her daughter, granddaughter, and grandson present.

She leaves to cherish her loving memory her daughters Cheryl and Elene and daughter in love Thurese; her son David; her granddaughters Stacey, Tahira, Khalia and Quanesa; great granddaughter Quadejah; grandsons Rahim, Adisa and Jelana; great grandsons Ramell, Rahim, Malik, Daquan, and Chancel, great-great- granddaughter Zariyah, great- great-grandson Zayon, her nieces, and cousins Emerson, Fredrika, Freddy and Greg Steward, and a host of other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date by the family.
