David Marshall Summerville was born to James (Piney) Garfield Summerville and Mary Lily Jamison on September 8, 1960, in Hackensack, NJ. He was the youngest of three children born to the union.
David grew up in Englewood, New Jersey and attended local public schools. David graduated from Dwight Morrow High School in 1978. He enlisted in the army immediately following graduation. During his time in the service, he distinguished himself as an expert sharpshooter and marksman. Upon receiving an honorable discharge from the Army, David accepted a position with the United States Post Office. He took pride in his work as a mail handler and developed many lifelong friendships there. He was employed there at the time of his untimely death.
David was a faithful servant at Trinity Baptist Church in Hackensack, New Jersey. “Minister Summerville” as he was affectionately called, became a member of Trinity Baptist Church on November 16, 1997. He was ordained as a Deacon on Sunday, January 9, 2000, by Rev. Jonathan B. Whitfield and licensed to preach by Rev. Jonathan B. Whitfield on March 11, 2012. Minister Summerville was one of the facilitators for the Tuesday morning Bible Study for Seniors. He also served as a Prison Chaplain. He served with the Homeless Ministry of the Trinity Baptist Church ministering to those that were unhoused and displaced in the community.
David passed away unexpectedly at home on October 14, 2023. David is survived by his two sisters, Janet Beatrice Summerville-Daniel (Newburgh, NY) and Tiffany James Summerville (Elmwood Park, NJ). He was predeceased by his parents James Summerville and Mary Lily Summerville and sister Leigh Ann Stevens. He will be missed by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, coworkers, Church Family, and friends. His altruistic spirit will continue to resonate within his community and beyond.
Cremation burial will take place at a later date at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery, Wrightstown, NJ.
