Jacqueline Yvonne Puryear Walton of Silver Spring, MD, was peacefully granted her angel wings on August 25, 2022. She was surrounded by her loving family during her last hours on this side of heaven.
She grew up in Durham, NC and was an honor roll student throughout her years in school. She attended Burton Elementary School, Shepard Middle School, and graduated from Hillside High School in the class of 1970.
Jackie grew up as an active member of Ebenezer Baptist Church. She sang in several choirs and participated in many church organizations. After Peace Missionary Baptist Church was established, she continued her membership there and attended whenever she was in town. Currently, she is a member of The People’s Community Baptist Church, Silver Spring, MD.
At an early age, she met and married Willie Harris. Although the union was shortly resolved, to them was born a son, Sean Everett Harris, who lives in Richmond, VA. He is the father of two girls, Jazmin Wood and Seanae Harris both residing in Maryland.
In 1973, Jackie moved to Washington, DC where she obtained employment at Howard University Hospital and met Howard Walton whom she wed in 1979. To them was born one daughter, Melanie Janine Walton (Waldorf, MD). She is the mother of three daughters, Makayla, Makenzie, and Madison. Before passing away, Jackie was also happy to meet a very important person in her life…her first great-grand son, Messiah, on June 7, 2022.
Jackie was a staff member in several divisions of Howard University Hospital, the last of which was the IT Department. After 48 years of service, she retired from Howard in August 2021.
Family was very important to Jackie. She truly looked forward to the “girl trips”! She spent a large portion of her time traveling to many places in and out of the country with them. Jackie enjoyed gospel and ole school 70’s music! Some of her hobbies were watching football, playing card games, solving puzzles, word search, and more recently Wordle. Like her mom, Jackie loved to watch and occasionally shop from QVC. She is also survived by her sister, Linda Brown (Moses); brother, Daryl Jones; brother, Curtis Jones; sister, Karen Sligh (Conrad); sisters Greta and Rhoda and brother, Boderick Sutton; and very special aunt and uncle, Madeline and Willie Plummer, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members and friends. Jackie was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Walton; mother, Ara Lee Puryear Jones; father, John Sutton (Clara); and stepfather, Eugene Jones.
A viewing will be held on September 9, 2022, at 12:00 PM at Peace Missionary Baptist Church, 2608 NC Hwy 55, Durham, NC 27713. Homegoing services will be held there at 1:00 PM. Interment will follow at Beechwood Cemetery.
Masks are to be worn and social distancing recommended at all gatherings with family and friends.
All acts of kindness are appreciated during this difficult time.

Love cousin Gwen and Mike. Forgot to put my name. The purple candle is me. Love y'all 😍
Sending love and prayers for my family. Jackie is my big cousin that I always admired. Whenever I would visit Durham during the summer months growing up she would always let me pal around with her and her friends. I always looked up to her because those were the good old days when you could hang and not worry about gun violence. She was always special in my heart. She is truly missed already. Cousins I know what you're going through as I most recently lost a sister. Praying for y'all. So sorry I can't physically be there but I hope you feel my spirit there. Love y'all and remember God knows best ❤️😘
