Obituary For George Henry Lewis Rhodes

George Henry Lewis Rhodes, age 78, departed this life on Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at Duke Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born on December 6, 1940 in Durham, North Carolina to the late John Edwards Sr. and Louise Rhodes. George was educated in the Durham Public schools including attendance at Hillside High School.

In his early years, George took a special interest in Football. He was very good at this sport. He played for several teams while in school and outside of school. George also loved to sing. He would take every opportunity to sing songs of praise in many churches and singing programs. For many years he was a background singer for the World’s Greatest Gospel singers and was also a great recruiter for this group. All who knew George shared in his love for singing. George also had a passion for cooking. One of his favourite meals was pinto beans, corn bread and fatback. After cooking his favourite meals, George would invite all to share his meal. He loved to feed others who enjoyed his cooking. George was also a veteran of the US Army.

George is survived by his Loving Mother-Louis Rhodes of Durham NC. His Brother-John Rhodes, Jr. of Durham NC. Five Sons-Michael Brooks of Durham NC, Lewis James Brooks of Durham NC, Dereno Rhodes of Moyock NC, George Jerrell Rhodes of Durham NC, and Antwon Little (stepson) of Durham NC. His Daughter’s Patricia Rhodes and Tonita Brooks of Durham NC, Sandy Clay of Durham NC, and Tiffany Little (stepdaughter) of Durham NC. One nephew Markus Rhodes of Durham NC. Two nieces Tanwa Rhodes and Delilah Rhodes of Durham NC. George also leaves behind 27 grandchildren.

George was preceded in death by his father the late John Edwards Sr., his brother the late Johnny Perry Rhodes, and his nephew the late Fritz Rhodes all of Durham NC.

Home going service will be at Holloway Memorial Funeral Home, 2502 NC Hwy 55, Durham, NC., on Saturday, June 15, 2019, at 2:00 pm, visitation at 1:00 pm.
