Doris Moore Holloway, 91 was born July 27, 1931 in Durham, North Carolina and departed this life on Juneteenth "Freedom Day" Monday, June 19, 2023. Doris, the youngest daughter of the late Aaron Joseph Moore and Ola Bass Moore, was predeceased by her husband John Mills Holloway, sister Beatrice Moore Hawley and brother Aaron Moore, Jr. She received her early education and diploma from Hillside High School, and later completed her B.S. in Physical Therapy (1953) and M.L.S. in Library Science (1962) degrees from North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC. Doris married the love of her life, J. Mills Holloway, 70 years ago on June 6, 1953.
She was very passionate about baking cakes, cooking, sewing, knitting, reading, spending time with family and friends, and dancing with her husband. Even during her extended illness, she seemed to be more concerned about others than herself. She enjoyed her final years in Roxboro, NC at the Helping Hands Adult Care Home. Because her health did not allow her to attend church, Doris religiously watched First Baptist Church of Glenarden online every Sunday when she was able to do so.
Doris devoted 38 years as a career Librarian with Johnson C. Smith University, Saint Augustine's University, Wake County Public Libraries, and retired from the State Library of North Carolina as Head of Government & Business Services Branch where she was awarded Order of the Long leaf Pine, the highest award for state service by the Governor.
Throughout her life she was an active member of the Raleigh/Durham community over the last 65 years. She was a member of the Saint Augustine's Chapel, serving on the Church Vestry and heading the Altar Guild. Her contributions to the College and Chapel were featured in the "Episcopal Women" traveling exhibit. Also, Doris was a Delta Dear and Diamond Life Member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority; recognized as Queen of the National Association of University Women; North Carolina Central University Alumni Association, NCCU Society of Golden Eagles; Hillside High School Alumni Association; Guys & Dolls; and she supported her husband in dozens of community organizations and political campaigns.
Doris is survived by: her sons, J. M. "Jay" Holloway, Jr. (Katriel) of Upper Marlboro, MD, and Ivan J. Holloway (Janelle) of Durham, NC; her grandchildren, Brittany J. Holloway of Charlotte, NC, Winston J. Holloway of Raleigh, NC, Jessica R. Holloway of Manassas, VA, Isaiah J. Holloway of Raleigh, NC, Faith S. Holloway of Upper Marlboro, MD, and bonus grandchildren, Bryan and Jasmine Rouse; sister-in-law Lily V. Holloway of Philadelphia, PA; and she was blessed with several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Mrs. Holloway was a wonderful light and quiet inspiration of peace and kindness. Rest in eternal joy in Christ Jesus.
My memory brings joy as I recall watching Jay wheel his Mom throughout the FBCG Worship Center. She greeted us with a warm smile and conversation. We let her know how grateful we are to have her son leading our Production team. For the past few years, my co-laborers and I prayed regularly for her. She will be missed.
