Obituary For Bernice "Bonnie" Chappell Rutledge
Funeral service for Bernice Rutledge, 78, of Auburn, AL, will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 12, 2024, at Greater Peace Missionary Baptist Church, 650 Jeter Avenue, Opelika, Alabama, 36801 with interment in Auburn Memorial Park Cemetery, 1000 East Samford Avenue, Auburn, Alabama, 36830, Reverend Clifford E. Jones, Pastor and Officiating, Reverend W.L. Muse, Eulogist.
Mrs. Rutledge, who passed away Thursday, October 3, 2024 at the Bethany House in Auburn, Alabama, was born October 2, 1946, in Bibb County, Alabama.
Public viewing will be Friday, October 11, 2024 from 2:00 p.m. โ 6:00 p.m. The family will be present from 5:00 p.m. โ 6:00 p.m. The Auburn Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will conduct The Omega Omega Service beginning at 6:00 p.m. The Omega Omega Service is open to the members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the public.
Mrs. Rutledge will lie in repose at the church one hour prior to the service.
She leaves to cherish her memory nurtured with kindness and grace: devoted husband of 55 years, Reverend Jonas E. Rutledge of Auburn, AL; two sons, Bryan Marcellus (Erika) Rutledge of Chelsea, AL, and Jonas Bernard Rutledge of Auburn, AL; one granddaughter, Erlandrya J. "Landi Lou" Rutledge; a treasured sister, Alma Carter of Burton, MI; three brothers, James "Boe" Chappell of Flint, MI, Robert Gene (Susan) Chappell of Montgomery, AL and Johnny (Beverly) Chappell, Jr. of Brierfield, AL; five sisters-in-law, Minnie Pearl (Reverend Blanton) Bennett of Del City, OK, Claudine (Robert) Copeland of Lawton, OK, Roxanne Brown of Hoover, AL, Veronica "Jeanie" (Alex) Hall of Ladson, SC and Jennifer (Todd) Marable of Deatsville, AL; two brothers-in-law, Kenneth A. Rutledge of Jemison, AL and Derex Ray (Candace) Rutledge of Chelsea, AL; two lifelong friends, Marie Dobine Rhoden and Betty Palm; adopted college children, Randy Hudson, Maureen Saunders Goins, Derrick Harris, TC Whiteside, Nisa Green and countless others; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

My Condolences and prayers are with the Rutledge family. Bernice and I became close sisters as we pledge Delta Delta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in 1968 at Alabama A&M Univerity. Her kind and warm Spirit will be missed.
Aunt Bernice was just the sweetest example of a Lady ever. Always so warm and welcoming. She & Uncle Jonas showed a teen girl how couples should treat each other and I will forever be grateful to them for that. Some people it's just hard to imagine them 'not there' physically but her presence will forever be felt by the life she lived. I'm sure Johnnie has received her baby sister and they are smiling down on us.
