Charles, JoAnn Deborah Murphy
JoAnn Murphy Charles, a resident of Baker, Louisiana passed away on November 18, 2024, at home, she was 82 years old. She was the only child born to the union of James & Lovie Evans Murphy. She was a loving mother, grandmother, niece, cousin and friend. If you knew her you couldn’t help but love her. She was a graduate of Northwestern High School and Southern University. She retired from the East Baton Rouge Parish School System after 43 years of dedicated service. She married Sam Charles Jr. of Palmetto, Louisiana and to this union a son was born, Adam Charles. JoAnn attended the Blackwater Congregation of Jehovah Witnesses in Baker. The hobbies she enjoyed most were cooking, baking cakes, flower and vegetable gardening, working word puzzles, and spending time with family. She is survived by her son, Adam L. Charles (Sharman), granddaughter, Samantha E. Charles, Zachary, Louisiana; sisters & brother; Lynda Murphy, Millicent Stephens, Priscilla Murphy & James Murphy, Jr.; step-sister & brother; Phyllis Moore & Roosevelt Taylor, all of Galveston, Texas; aunts, Earnestine Mills (Jimmie), and Ada Murphy, Baton Rouge, Louisiana; sisters-in-laws; Elizabeth Hills (J.D.) and Ritha Green, Palmetto, Louisiana, Dollie Ned (Walter), Houston, Texas and Mary Zachery (Joseph) Opelousas, Louisiana; and many devoted cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She is preceded in death by her loving husband Sam Charles, Jr., parents, James Murphy, Sr. & Lovie Evans Murphy, stepmother, Della Pearl Murphy, son, Anthony Smith, maternal grandparents, Alexander & Lovie Watson Evans, and paternal grandparents, Israel & Bessie Murphy. A public viewing will be held on Monday, November 25, 2024, from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. at Hall Davis and Sons on Scenic Hwy. Tuesday, November 26, 2024, a visitation will be from 8:00 a.m. until service at 10:00 a.m., conducted by local elders of Jehovah Witnesses. Burial to follow in Evans Memorial Garden Cemetery, Plank Rd., Baker, La.
