Walter Louis Preston, Jr., affectionately known as “Lucky,” of Hampton, GA, peacefully transitioned from this life to eternal rest on Friday, March 14, 2025, at his residence. Born on May 27, 1953, in Martinsville, VA, he was the son of Marion Young Preston and the late Walter Louis Preston, Sr. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Venena S. Preston (Nena).
A proud graduate of Martinsville High School, Class of 1971, Lucky pursued higher education at Norfolk State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. His passion for learning led him to Bowie State University, where he obtained a master’s degree in Administrative Management (Public). Dedicated to service, he honorably retired after 21 years in the military. Following his military career, Lucky continued to make an impact as an Occupational Safety and Construction Teacher at Griffin High School in Griffin, GA.
Lucky’s memory will forever be cherished by his loving mother, Marion Young Preston of Martinsville, VA; his devoted wife, Sun Pok Preston of Hampton, GA; his two sons, Walter L. Preston, III, and Andrew Preston, both of Richmond, VA; and his beloved granddaughter, Aaliyah Preston of GA. He is also survived by his sisters, Iris Clevert (Wayne) of Glen Allen, VA, and Faith Wilson of Martinsville, VA; his brother, Robert “Lan” Preston (Nancy) of Collinsville, VA; two aunts, Malena Sue Gill of Martinsville, VA, and Matilene Grogan of Roanoke, VA; one uncle, Posey Young of Richmond, VA; his best friend, Roger Dalton of Martinsville, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
A celebration of Lucky’s life will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Saint Paul High Street Baptist Church, 401 Fayette St., Martinsville, VA. No burial will follow.
Lucky’s warmth, wisdom, and kindness touched the lives of many, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
