On Sunday, June 12, 2022, Thomas Alvin Carter transitioned from this earthly life to eternal life. Born April 30, 1932, in Henry County, VA, to John A. Carter and Lula Hodge Carter who preceded him in death.
In addition to his parents, Thomas was preceded in death by one son: Felix Aundra Carter; four sisters; Rubena Rossley, Betty Mitchell, Juanita Whyte, and Ivy Jean Brown; and three brothers, William Harold Carter, John Edward Carter, and James Monroe Carter.
Thomas was a member of the Jerusalem Christian Church (DOC). He was a retired truck driver. He was a United States Army Veteran serving during the Korean Conflict.
Those left to cherish his memory include: his wife, Mamie Echols Carter of the home; his children; Colleen C. (Jessie) Hairston of Richmond, VA, Alvin (Deborah) Carter of Raleigh, NC, Cheryl Carter of Riverside, CA, Alex (Martha) Carter of Fontana, CA, and Janell C. (James) Cockerham of Greensboro, NC; one brother, Jessie Leon Carter of Martinsville, VA; eight grandchildren, Trisha (Michael) Ogden, Brandon Carter, Alisha Carter, Jordan (Mariah) Carter, Nicholas Carter, Daniel Carter, Layla Cockerham, and Logan Cockerham; six great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2022, at 2:30 p.m. at the C.R.V. Memorial Chapel at Hairston Funeral Home with Pastor Robert Smith, Eulogist. Burial will follow at the Carter Family Cemetery, Meadow Garden Ln., Martinsville, VA. Viewing will be held on Friday, June 17, 2022, at Hairston Funeral Home between the hours of 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. In accordance with the CDC, a face covering, and social distancing is required.

I remember when I was a child and my papa would bring me down to uncle Alfred's house I would be so afraid of the dogs , and he would chuckle and say " come on girl them dogs not gonna bother you ." But, he would have to hold my hand for me to come inside anyway. So much love and laughter from him and aunt mamie. I'm praying for strength for my grandfather and the carter family .
