On Thursday, November 2, 2023, Robert Lee Rumley 94, of Via’s View Dr., Martinsville transitioned from this earthly life to eternal life at SOVAH Health-Martinsville. He was born in Henry County, VA on August 31, 1929, the son of Carper Lee Rumley and Rosa Alice Jones Rumley.
In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Via Rumley, and his siblings, Sam Jones, Annie Clanton, Ida Gravely, Joe C. Rumley, and John Rumley.
Robert retired from American Furniture Company after twenty-one years of service. He was a faithful member of Christian View Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Assistant Finance Secretary, an Usher, the Layman's League, and on the Cemetery Committee. Robert was a United States Army Veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict.
Those left to cherish his memory include: one daughter, Peggy Waller of Ridgeway, VA; two sons, William Spencer, and John M. Spencer both of Ridgeway, VA; two stepsons, General (Retired) Dennis Via (Linda) of McLean, VA, and Tyrone Via (Renee) of Fredericksburg, VA; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Rachel Penn of Spencer, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
A visitation service will be held on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11:30 a.m. at Christian View Missionary Baptist Church, 360 Arrowhead Circle, Spencer, VA with Pastor Gregory Perkins, Eulogist. The burial will follow in the church cemetery. A public viewing will be held on Friday, November 10, 2023, at Hairston Funeral Home between the hours of 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Other times, the family will be receiving friends at the home of his niece, 3797 Greensboro Rd., Ridgeway, VA.
