Obituary For Mother Martha A. Moyer
Our beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, and dear friend, Martha Ann Moyer, 87, peacefully transitioned at Beacon Place in Greensboro, NC, surrounded by love and care on March 12, 2025. She was born on December 27, 1937, in Richmond, VA, to the late Charles Anderson Sr. and Martha L. Crawford, and was educated in the Richmond City School System. Early in her young adult life, she dedicated her life to Christ and received the gift of the Holy Ghost and baptized at the Refuge Church of Our Lord of Christ in Richmond, VA. Her passion for music shone brightly as she joined the young adult church choir and played the piano. It was through Bishop John W. Pernell that she met Bishop Joseph Wheeler Moyer, and they were married for 35 years.
Martha Moyer truly exemplified the inspiring qualities of Proverbs 31, highlighting her remarkable strength, wisdom, and industriousness while embracing the profound importance of reverence for the Lord.
She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Anderson Sr; her beloved husband, Bishop Joseph Wheeler Moyer; and two cherished daughters, Brenda Moyer and Drucilla Moyer. Mother Moyer was self-employed with her own cleaning business until her retirement after 25 years of service. She enjoyed this work immensely. Later, she moved into the Greensboro Carriage House, where she beautifully crafted a family photo mural in her room. All who visited her had the opportunity to see their photos or add their own pictures to the mural.
Mother Martha’s life was marked by kindness, strength, and dedication to her beloved family and church community. While serving as First Lady of Waterway Temple in Bassett, VA, she was affectionately known as Mother Moyer. She cherished her role in the body of Christ and served as a missionary, Sunday School teacher, and Director of Music for the Waterway Senior Choir, where she also played the piano.
Her love extended beyond the church, as we often witnessed her sharing her faith while running errands or shopping. She kept witness cards in her car to give to those she encountered while witnessing about Jesus Christ. Proverbs 11:30 states, “He who wins souls is wise.”
Mother Moyer was a shining beacon of light, celebrated for her heartfelt praise of God and her infectious passion for music. Her culinary creations brought much joy, her teaching and mentoring commitment nurtured countless minds. With a remarkable talent for gardening, she cultivated beauty all around her. Always ready to lend a hand, her kindness and nurturing spirit touched everyone. Her unwavering love for family was evident as she lovingly supported her children throughout their journeys in life.
Mother Moyer leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and resilience through her devoted daughters, Deborah Moyer of Arlington, VA, Martha Moyer of Plano, TX, Beverly Perez (John) of Huddleston, VA; Karen Hill (John) of Vienna, VA; Stella Roy of Martinsville VA; Rosie Pickard of Reidsville, NC; and sons Nathaniel Moyer (Ruby) of Axton, VA, and Wheeler Moyer, Jr. (Lois) of Bridgeport, CT. In addition, she is survived by sister Jessica Tabb of Mitchellville, MD; Twenty-two grandchildren, Melvin Moyer (Eydie) and Michael Moyer of Bridgeport, CT; Stephanie Moyer Dowlin of West Haven, CT; Mareka Moyer White (Dedrick) of Upper Marlboro, MD; A. Dwane Roy (Pamela) of Callands, VA; Sherrill Roy Esdaile (Michael) of Martinsville, VA; Marvin Roy (Tina) of Axton, VA; Lawrence Roy (Angela) of Martinsville, VA; Gary Pickard (Tammy) of Reidsville, NC; Roger Pickard, Reidsville, NC; Jeffrey Pickard (Sandra), Greensboro, NC; Jerome Pickard (Isabella), Germany; Angela Pickard, Greensboro, NC; Michelle Pickard Malone (Oscar), Greensboro, NC; Maurice Pickard (Etta) of Reidsville, NC; Robert Moyer (Tenisha), Richmond, VA; Kyona Green of North Chesterfield, VA; Jocelyn Moyer of Henrico, VA; Brian Moyer of North Chesterfield, VA; Dr. Faith Carter of Plano TX; John Nathan Hill III and Natalie Hill of Vienna, VA; Fifty-two great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren, and a loving array of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many cherished friends, whose lives were enriched by her presence.
While we mourn her passing, we find comfort in God’s love and in our memories of her warmth, kindness, and the lasting impact she made on our hearts.
A visitation service will be held on Saturday, March22, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. with the funeral service at 11 a.m. at Progressive Prayer Temple, 64 Cameron Rd., Martinsville, VA with Bishop Milton, Sr., Eulogist. Interment will follow at the Moyer Family Cemetery, Moyer Lane, Axton, VA.
A public viewing will be held on Friday, March 21, 2025, at Hairston Funeral Home, 301 Fayette St., Martinsville between the hours of 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. Live streaming of the funeral service will be available at Hairston Funeral Home live via Facebook.

My condolences to Mother Martha family. She was a dear sweet lady. We won't forget, when my/our mom was sick, Mother Martha was a faithful visitor, and she never came empty-handed. We had the chance to visit her in Greensboro and enjoyed our visit and I prayed for her every day. May she rest in peace. Love and Prayers
