Milton Blount went home to be with the Lord on August 27, 2024, at Emory University Hospital due to complications from congestive heart failure and multiple myeloma (he had battled multiple myeloma for 18 years).
Milton was born on August 15, 1946, to the union of Hubert and Magdalene Johnson Blount. He was the eldest of seven children. Milton’s mother Magdalene died in childbirth when he was five years old after giving birth to four children. His father re-married Lillie Bell Blount and they had three children. As a boy, Milton worked hard on the farm and excelled in school having learned from his father the importance of having a good work ethic. Growing up in a Christian household, Milton accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at a young age. He joined Trinity CME Church in Sparta, GA as a young boy and was baptized there. He graduated from Hancock Central High School a year early at the age of 16 in 1963.
After graduation, he attended Paine College in Augusta, GA where he majored in history. After college, Mr. Blount started his career in insurance in a leadership development program at The Chubb Insurance Group in Atlanta. While in Atlanta, he met the love of his life Edith Bulls Blount and they married on October 23, 1971. The couple immediately moved to San Francisco due to Mr. Blount’s job promotion with Chubb. While living in California, they were blessed with the birth of their daughter Tamara Elise. After moving back to Atlanta in 1976 due to his father’s illness, he worked for The Chubb Group of Atlanta again before founding Interstate Insurance Services for prominent Atlanta businessman Herman J. Russell. He earned his Masters in Business Administration from Atlanta University in 1979. Over time, he transformed Interstate into an independent insurance agency. In 2004, Milton sold his book of business to Willie Burke's agency and continued working as a business consultant and speaker until his retirement in 2007 due to illness.
Milton was a lifetime member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and was initiated in the Nu Mu Lamda chapter on July 7, 1986. Until he became ill, he was very active and participated on many chapter committees, including the scholarship and beautillion committees. He received an Alpha national program award and certificates of merit.
Milton was also an active member of his community and participated in various leadership programs. He was a proud graduate and member of the Leadership Atlanta class of 1981 and the Leadership Georgia class of 1982. Additionally, Milton served on the board of directors for an elementary school in Dekalb County, Georgia as well as other corporate boards.
Upon moving back to Atlanta in the late seventies/early eighties, Milton joined Saint Philip AME Church and was a very active member for over 40 years. Milton was a very proud member of both the Saint Philip Mighty Male Chorus and Choir Number One. He also served as a member of the SPC steward board, and as a class leader. He regularly attended bible school classes, Sunday School classes, and was a regular and extremely dedicated member of his prayer group. Mr. Blount also attended the Saint Philip Crusade for Christ (Iron Men) men’s monthly bible school, yearly men’s retreats, and much more.
Milton was a veteran in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1970-1973 and was discharged with honors.
Milton was preceded in death by his mother and father Magdalene and Hubert Blount, his sister Gloria Dene Blount Winston, and his brother-in-law Walter Kenneth Bulls (Eva). Milton will be sadly missed and always cherished by his wife of almost 53 years Dr. Edith Bulls Blount, his daughter Tamara Elise Blount, his sisters: Carolyn Blount Johnson (Leonard), Rosia Blount Nesbitt (the late Rawlins), and Delphine Blount Colbeth, his brothers: Vernon Bernard Blount (the late Karen) and Calvin Blount, and his sister -in-law Shirlynn N. To the Blount Family: Milton and I became "Good Friday" "The seven last words of Christ" champions. It was the one day a year that I knew I would hear him and he me before we saw each other! It was Good Friday and we loved attending the service to witness 7 miracles in less than 3 hours and we had front row seats! The miracle was hearing, seeing and rejoicing out loud without fear of judgement at the joy of receiving the Lord's word from 7 Baptist, AME, CME, UME and church of God in Christ ministers as they wrestle with the chore of speaking for 15 minutes each telling the story of the greatest gift ever given to mankind: eternal life. For over 15 years we smiled during this program. We knew how blessed everyone in attendance was to be embolden to continue to walk by faith. Milton walked many years in faith. He embodied the love that Jesus had for him and his family. He gave Tamara time to grow up and Edith time to be okay with the outcome from his illness. To those who shared these special encounters with him in God's house, he gave us time to praise! Hallelujah, my friend! Sleep well is my prayer.
Edith abd Tamara, I am sending you my deepest sympathy for your loss. Milton brought a warm, calming spirit to this world that will be missed. You are in my prayers.
