It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Mr. Charles Slaughter on April 6, 2020. He was born March 2nd, 1950 to Arma and Eula Mae Slaughter in Cuthbert GA, where he grew up with his three brothers and three sisters.
Charles was drafted into the United States Marine Corps in 1968 and served in the Vietnam War. After returning from war, Charles married Marjorie Gilbert of Cuthbert, Ga on June 1st, 1974. They made their home in Albany GA where they had 2 sons, Kirpatrick and Anthony.
As a distinguished military veteran, Charles also proudly served his country in the National Guard during Operation Desert Storm. His contributions to our country continued throughout his 40+ years of dedication to the American Legion. He served as Post Commander of American Legion Post 512 of Albany GA where he was recognized with many awards and accolades. He also received the honor of being elected 2nd District Commander for the state of Georgia in Spring of 2019. Charles represented the American Legion with distinction when called upon to participate in various media publications and news stories.
Charles was an advocate for voting rights and voter registration, and he volunteered yearly as a poll worker throughout Dougherty County.
Charles was a certified computer programmer. He worked for the Albany Water, Gas, and Light Commission for 40 years, before retiring in 2012. But, his real love was music. His passion for music culminated into a second profession as a disc jockey. He performed at parties, reunions, receptions, clubs, and other social events throughout Southwest Georgia and was affectionately known as The Mighty Hot Dog. In fact, Hot Dog became his unofficial nickname.
Most importantly, Charles was a Christian. He was a devoted member and Deacon at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church where he served on various committees and enjoyed teaching Sunday School.
Charles definitely left his mark on all those he interacted with: from his leadership, shared wisdom, service to others, funniest to him and oftentimes corny jokes, to his overwhelming willingness to volunteer and help those he could. Charles was a devoted and proud Husband, Father, GrandPa, Brother, Uncle, Cousin, and Friend. We love you, we salute you, and we will truly miss you!
Charles was preceded in death by his mother, father, and brother James Slaughter.
He leaves to cherish his memory a devoted and loving wife of almost 46 years, Marjorie of Albany GA; two sons, Kirpatrick Slaughter (Charesse) of Atlanta GA and Anthony Slaughter (Stephanie) of Atlanta GA; "daughter" LaToya Gilbert of Savannah GA; grandchildren: Corinthia, Micaiah, Stephon, and Samauri all of Atlanta GA; brothers Donald Slaughter (Phyllis) of Cuthbert GA, Grayling Davis (reared as a brother) of Cuthbert GA, and Jonathan Gilbert (Janice) of Cuthbert GA; sisters Naomi Jenkins (Bobby) of Cuthbert GA, Linda Porter of Cuthbert GA, and Leslie Green (Richard) of Leesburg GA; numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, as well as many other loving relatives and close friends.
The family wishes to thank the vast network of family, relatives, friends, and colleagues for all of your love and support during this time. We cannot thank you enough and you are greatly appreciated. May GOD bless you all eternally. A memorial service and celebration of life will be announced at a later date. Grissom-Clark Funeral Home.
