Obituary For Mr. Armstead Salters

Armstead Leon Salters, husband of Joan L. Salters for more than 60 years, was born December 10, 1939 to the late Willie Dread and Marie Izzard Salters in St. Stephen, South Carolina. He departed this life peacefully at home on December 22, 2022.

Armstead Salters dedicated his life to serving students and the community as an educator in Atlanta, Georgia for more than 40 years. In 1969, he became acting Assistant Principal at Washington High School, then assumed the role of Assistant Principal in 1972 before becoming the evening school Principal in 1978. He was assigned Principal of Gideons Elementary School of the historic Pittsburgh community in 1989 where he concluded his career in 2010. As an educator, Mr. Salters advocated for students and encouraged them to pursue excellence in all endeavors. With firm counsel, Mr. Salters challenged his students to never give up by not giving up on them. He knew that obstacles could be overcome with faith in something more than your present circumstance.

Hope and persistence were guiding forces for Mr. Salters as he fought as a Claflin University student during the Civil Rights Movement. He viewed education and determination as key factors to achieving success over any opposition.

Mr. Salters was a faithful member of Central United Methodist Church(CUMC). He was a proud alumnus of Claflin University where he joined Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and attended Atlanta University. Mr. Salters was also a devoted family man to his son Armstead Salters Jr., grandfather to Armstead (Ashontay) Salters III and Aaron Salters, and great grandfather to Armstead IV and bonus great grandchildren Marley and Isaiah. He was also a father to many in the communities that he served. Mr. Salters leaves behind numerous relatives and friends.

Guests can pay tribute to Mr. Salters during a viewing Thursday, December 29, 2022 from 2pm to 6pm. A homecoming celebration will be held December 30, 2022 at 11am at Central United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to Armstead L. Salters' Scholarship Fund in care of Central United Methodist Church (CUMC). Mr. Salters was a great humanitarian. He had a love for all🌏. He desired his students, staff, and people in the community to do their best. One couldn't ask to have worked under the leadership of a better person. His kind heart, caring soul, and supportive spirit inspired so many of us. Mr. Salters will be greatly missed. Rest in peace, Mr. Salters. Renée Solomon/ Gideons Elementary School

Mr. Salters' legacy as an educational leader is unparalleled! I was a member at Central, and taught at the middle school that his students fed into; Mr. Salters was so supportive of the children and families in the community, and he was so supportive of my growth and development as a new teacher. He set a high bar for school leaders, and when I became one, I tried to apply what I observed from Mr. Salters' leadership. May these and other memories uplift Mr. Salters' family. (Felicia Phillips)

Mr. Salters was my principal at Gideons Elementary Mr.Salters was one of the BEST principals APS had He had a heart of gold and loved his students. He wanted nothing but the best for us I can remember his paddle which he named it board of education. Our parents had NO problem allowing him to us it. He was not only a principal he was a father to most of us in the pittburgh community. he was supportive and caring I can remember him pulling up to get me in his yellow benz for school when it would rain. I later learned he was not only my elementary school principal he was my frat brother heart and prayers are with his family he will truly be missed. Rest well Phirst Pham Krystal Bell & Family Gideons Elementary Class of 1994

I remember when Mr. Salters and his family moved to Atlanta. I was visiting my aunt that day on Euharlee Street, Atlanta. Little did I know at that time he would be my science teacher and that I would be the retirement specialist that handled his retirement when he retired from Atlanta Public Schools. He was near and dear to my heart. RIP, love from Mai-Lan Smith Williams, Class of 1970. My condolences to Mr. Salter's family.

Mr. Salters was a good man. As a principal at Gideons, he treated each and every student like they were his own. He made every effort to change the trajectory of each child. He wanted the best for children. Mr. Salters was caring and dedicated leader! I thank God that our paths crossed! He will be missed.

To the best principal, mentor and all around wonderful human being. He loved his Gideons family and the community. We love you and are so thankful you were in our lives!!! Your light will forever shine in my heart. Cathy Brock and the late Trish Devitt

Sharing memories of my former high school Principal Mr. Salters, he was my HERO! My family moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 1973. My sister Juanita and I attended Booker T. Washington High School. Mr. Salters, Principal Collins and my home room teacher Mr. Lawson helped me adjust to a new school. Mr. Salters saw the potential in me that I could not even encompass as a teenager. While in high school and under his leadership I became a member of the SUP ( Student Union For Progress) and EAT (Emergency Assistant Teachers). I Thank God for Mr. Salters and the village that helped me along life's journey. Mr. Salters genuinely cared for his students, when he gave you a task to complete-if it consisted of going to one end of the hall to the other end or floor to floor you had to keep up because when getting the task done he only knew one speed-fast. I am at the threshold of a 40 year career in Public Safety and the majority of the 40 years has been in leadership and management. I THANK GOD FOR PLACING PEOPLE LIKE MR. SALTERS IN MY LIFE AT THE RIGHT TIME... Mr. Salters, my friend be at peace and rest. πŸ™πŸ½πŸ™πŸ½πŸ™πŸ½ My sincere condolences to The Salters Family, Patricia Kendrick-Walker ( Student of Booker T. Washington High School 1973-1976)

For the fifty-three (53) years that I have known Mr. Armstead Leon Salters, aka Leon and Uncle Nute (by nieces and nephews), it has been a divine blessing. I have always known Leon to be so very personable, of pristine character, astute wisdom, great Christian generosity, and he was also often comical. He has made an indelible mark on the world not only as an educator, but also as a person. There is a well-known proverb that states "People may not always remember your name, but they will always remember how you treat them." Leon will be greatly remembered for the way he treated others and for the sterling contributions that he has made to this world. I have been indeed enriched by being an extended part of the Levine and Salters Family. I can't forget Joan, who has been a jewel of a wife, and an impeccable friend to her husband and all those she encountered. As Leon has made his earthly transition, the lyrics to the song which states: "When you hear of my homegoing, don't worry about me; I'm just another soldier gone on home to be with the Lord." These lyrics keeps resonating with me because I do believe they are so appropriate for Leon's transitioning. Sleep in peace with the Master, Leon!!! (Marie Brooks--Sumter, SC

To the Salters Family, please accept my deepest condolences to you for the loss of your loved one. Mr. Salters was a one of a kind and a God Fearing man. He had a profound impact on so many students, including me. He exhibited so many great characteristics...leader, administrator, listener, motivator, disciplinarian, Christian, role model...just to name a few. Regardless your grade level, he knew your first and last name. He kept the halls clear after that bell rang for you to be in class. Most of all "we" the students knew that he "genuinely" cared. Mr. Salters "always" walked the walk!. I could go on forever about the difference he made during my four years as a Washingtonian. I will carry with me, not only his words of encouragement, but how he made me feel. Heaven has gained another Angel! Sincerely, Pamela "Fort" Sands Class of "1978"

Mr. Salters ..: a "no nonsense, where is your hall pass, and what's your last name " disciplinarian. When I first saw Mr. Salters I was 13 in the eighth grade (1973) at BTW. He had zero fear of the older upper class men . That alone was enough for me to get my act straight quickly. He was also a gracious and fair man, who would listen to your story and wouldn't think twice to help. Thank you Mr. Salters for keeping me on the right path. My condolences to the family. May he rest in peace.
