Aaron Heard was born January 23, 1947 in Athens, Georgia to the union of Mr. Clarence Heard and Mrs. Henrietta Sheats Heard. He peacefully departed from this life on February 2, 2022 at the age of 75. Aaron was a longtime resident of Athens, Georgia and graduated from Burney-Harris High School in 1965. He furthered his education at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana after receiving a football scholarship and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Management. Prior to graduating from Southern University, he joined the ranks of the NFL as a wide receiver with the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Redskins. Due to injuries, he left the NFL and returned to Southern University to complete his education. In 1974 he returned to his hometown, Athens, to begin his career and became the Director of the East Athens Community Center in 1975. During this time, Aaron began working with the youth and adults in that area. He was passionate and devoted to the development of the people in the East Athens Community. In 1981, under his leadership, the Athens Tutorial Program was initiated to encourage students to stay in school. This program is still in operation. His passion and love for the Community afforded him the opportunity to dedicate himself to many activities and programs to help the residents in the area where he grew up. Among these programs was the GED class for adults, the Summer Youth Basketball Program, the Athens Grand Slam Program, and the Classic City Dolphins Football Program. Aaron was also an active volunteer in the community. He was a volunteer at the Clarke County Police Department with the Crime Prevention/Weed and Seed Program, he promoted the opening to two new substations, he volunteered his services to the class of 1965 and to the Southern University Atlanta Chapter Alumni. On December 19, 2021, the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department bestowed the honor upon him by renaming the East Athens Community Center in his honor. This center is now named the Aaron Heard Park and Community Center.

Loved ones are always in the hearts of their loved ones. So Aaron will be in my heart and my memories. I'll always treasure the kind way that he treated me and his generous assistance in different ways. He was like the older brother that I never had. Now he's resting in sleep, and no longer suffering.
