THOMAS LEE POWELL, affectionately called “Lewis” or “Tommy” was born December 22, 1952 in Brunswick County, VA to the late Madeline OKline Powell and departed this life suddenly on February 13, 2024 at his residence in South Hill, VA. He was also preceded in death by his brother- Alfred Powell.
Thomas was baptized at an early age and joined Good Hope Baptist Church, Blackridge, VA. He attended the public schools in Mecklenburg County, VA.
As a child he was mischievous, energetic, brave and daring. Thomas lived an authentic life; he embraced his true self, unapologetically refused to conform to societal expectations or hide his true identity. Just like everyone else he faced difficult challenges and setbacks, but always accepting his choices and actions. He always said, “I am what I am, I can’t be no one but me, don’t never let your right know what your left hand is doing. He took the good with the bad and he did it his way.
Thomas worked most of his life in construction; he also was called “Mr. Fix It.” He worked on lawn mowers, TV’s, and electrical things. Sometimes he was an auto-mechanic. He loved music, dancing, singing, talking and socializing with people.
Thomas leaves to cherish his memory: two sisters- Bertha (Freda) Evans and Della P. (Marvin) Walker; two nieces- Brittany Evans and Aaliyah G. Tucker; five nephews- Gary Powell, Terrell Thompson, Roddereck Evans, Jamal Thompson, Devin Evans; five great-nieces; three great-nephews; one aunt- Geraldine Powell; and a host of cousins and friends, and his special “Happy Hour Crew.”
