MRS. RACHEL DELORIS TALLEY STURDIVANT, daughter of the late Rubin T. and Rebecca Townes Talley, was born March 29, 1950 in Palmer Springs, VA and departed this life February 9, 2024 at Bowling Green Health & Rehabilitation Center, Bowling Green, VA. She was also preceded in death by six sisters and two brothers, and grandparents- Cornelius and Cornelia Alexander Townes.
Early in life Rachel was baptized and joined Roanoke Chapel United Church of Christ, Palmer Spring, VA. She was a 1968 graduate of the former East End High School, South Hill, VA.
On September 28, 1969, she was married to the late Cecil Sturdivant and to this union two children were born; a daughter, Yolanda preceded her in death also. Following their union, the family became members of Temple Gate RZUA Church. While there she was an active servant; she sung in the choir, served as an Usher and on the Hospitality Committee until her health began to fail.
Rachel began her working for years at LaCrosse Sportswear, but later found her passion at South Hill Elementary School Cafeteria. She worked there for many years retiring as a Supervisor for the cafeteria.
In her spare time, she enjoyed cleaning and dancing. Rachel was the life of the party and always greeted everyone with her beautiful smile. She loved the south Hill Community and was well known throughout the town.
Rachel leaves to cherish fond memories: a son- Cecil M. Sturdivant, Jr., Bowling Green, VA; son-in-law, Ricky Skipwith, Woodbridge, VA; two grandchildren- Rickia Skipwith, Bowling Green, VA and Christopher Skipwith, Woodbridge, VA; two great-grandchildren-Kristian (KJ) Skipwith an Avianna Whitney, both of Bowling Green, VA; nieces that were caregivers- Chandreka Simmons and Lucy Williams; three sisters- Daisy Wise (Rob), Kannapolis, NC; Brenda Bullock, Manson, NC; and Helen T. Hilliard, Palmer Springs, VA; brother- Rev. Earle (Juanita) Talley, Palmer Springs, VA; four sisters-in-law, Ethel M. Edmonds, South Hill, VA; Annette Avery, Hopewell, VA; Jocelyn Jiggetts, South Hill, VA and Gloria Hill, Tampa, FLA; three brothers-in-law, Joel Jones, Palmer Springs, VA; Ellis βVestβ Sturdivant and Mallory βAndreβ (Chantel) Sturdivant all of South Hill, VA and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
My friend always! I'm saddened of the passing of Rachel , my sympathy goes out to the family. I met her in 8th grade and Deborah Jane and our friendship never changed! Rest easy my girls. Love you both, Barbara A. Brown Finley
