MRS. MARY EMMA GAYLES JONES WINCKLER, affectionately known as “M” and “Poopoo”, daughter of the late George and Emma Coleman Gayles was born March 7, 1943 in Mecklenburg County, VA and departed this life February 7, 2024 at her sister and brother-in-law’s home in Chase City, VA. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Sarah F. Hite Brooks of Richmond, VA.
At an early age she was baptized and joined Union Hill RZUA Church, Baskerville, VA. She received her education from Mecklenburg County Public School System.
After graduation she moved to New York City where she continued her education through Manpower Development. After graduation, she was employed by the New York City Department of Personnel as a Stenographer.
Mary later met and married the late Curtis Lee Jones and to this union a son, Kenneth Lee was born.
After relocating back to Virginia, Mary joined Lone Oak Baptist Church where she was an active member until her health began to fail. She served as Clerk/Secretary for more than 32 years; past president of the Missionary Society, a member of the Pastor’s Aid, Senior Choir, Usher Board, and Sunday School and a Diakonos.
Mary was employed with Lake Country Area Agency On Aging for many years. She then met Robert C. Winckler and later married in April of 1991. He also preceded her in death.
Mary community involvements and accomplishments included: Past President of the VFW Women’s Auxiliary, Past President of AARP, and a lifetime member of NAACP and served as secretary for many years until her health began to fail.
Mary leaves to cherish her memories: a son- Kenneth Lee (Tanya) Jones, South Hill, VA and Sybil Brown of MD who was like a daughter; sister- Barbara G. (Harold) Speede, Chase City, VA; three grandchildren- Kenneth and Kevin Talley, and Aeisha Talley, all of Philadelphia, PA; six great-grandchildren- Kynnedi, Kobi, Madison, Kenneth, Jr., Kenyah and Levar; four nieces whom she loved as her daughters- Debra (Clint) Mann, MD; Aundrea Speede, South Hill, VA; Pamela Speede and Beverly (Kevin) Speede-Johnson, all of Chase City, VA; two nephews- George Brooks and Joseph Brooks; two uncles- James Coleman, PA and Wesley Coleman, South Hill, VA; devoted friend- William Suber, South Hill, VA; And a host of other relatives and friends.
Mary Winckler left us a quote: “Don’t Worry I Am Alright Now”. She will truly be missed.
