MR. FLETCHER AVERY, son of the late Marchester and Ellen Spells Avery was born February 25, 1942 in Cumberland County, NC. He was the oldest of 13 children and learned very early on to help with his younger siblings. This helped to shape him into the dependable, responsible man we all knew, loved and respected. He was a humble, gentle soul. The strong, silent type who simply did what was needed to be done and never wanted credit for his good deeds. He succumbed to his illness on October 15, 2022 at 7:55 PM in the Hundley Center, South Hill, VA. He was also preceded in death by his son- Arnold Webster and brothers- Albert, Moses, and Tony Avery.

Fletcher grew up in the Turnbull, N.C. community and attended China Grove Missionary Baptist Church as a child.

He was educated in the Cumberland County School System and attended Seabrook Elementary and Armstrong High School.

After years of working on the farm with his father, Fletcher moved to Washington, DC where he met and married the love of his life, JoAnn Logan (his “Boo”).

After retiring they relocated to the Boydton, VA area and made it their home. They found a church family at Penuel RZUA and became faithful members. They were married for 42 years before JoAnn transitioned to glory in October of 2021. This match made in Heaven has now been reunited there!

One of Fletcher’s hobbies was cooking and if you ever had the pleasure of tasting his food, you were in for a culinary treat. He had “skills” in the kitchen and especially loved to host the family for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. Another hobby was watching Westerns! If you visited him, he was likely sitting on the couch watching Gunsmoke or Bonanza, and you better not stand in front of the TV while his shows were on, unless you were made of glass. He also had a passion for gardening, yardwork, and home projects. God blessed him with gifted hands that could create and build just about anything he put his mind to doing. He actually built several pieces of equipment to help his wife with her physical therapy. If he saw or envisioned it in his mind, he could build it!

Fletcher leaves to cherish his memories: his daughter- Bonnie Joyce James; five grandchildren- William, Toya, Sheridan, Arnise and Aunyee; numerous great-grands; brothers- Chester, Jr. (Catherine); Harold (Diane); Jerry, Ceavie, and Dwayne Avery; sisters- Sally Jones, Eliza McDonald, Mary and Andrea Avery; Beloved nieces and nephew, Tiffany and Tierra Hunter, Jada Locke, and Shawn Avery; special cousin- Griscilda Tate; special friend and caregiver- Grace Crews, and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Asking ALL attendees to please wear a mask.
