MRS. DEBBORAH JANE STURDIVANT CHAVIS, affectionately called “Debbie,” “Debra Jane,” or “Aunt Jane,” was born February 7, 1950 in South Hill, VA to the late Ellis and Hannah Murrall Sturdivant and entered eternal rest on September 9, 2023 in VCU-Community Memorial Hospital, South Hill, VA. She was also preceded in death by her three brothers- Ray, Howard and Cecil Sturdivant.
Debbie was baptized at an early age and joined Temple Gate RZUA Church.
Debborah was a 1968 graduate of East End High School. She was a majorette, a cheerleader, and flag bearer for the East End High School Wolfpack. Debbie and Glenn were voted the “Cutest Couple” during their Senior Class Ceremony.
On April 17, 1970, she became Mrs. Chavis by marrying the “Love of Her Life,” Glenn Ray Chavis and to this union they were blessed with additional love, their children.
Debborah gave back to her community through many years of employment with Mecklenburg County Public School System, serving as a Teacher’s Aide and Office Assistant. She spent ten plus years working in the healthcare field at Community Memorial Hospital, serving as a Unit Clerk in the registration department.
Debra Jane loved people and could strike up a conversation with anyone and she had a special love for her family circle. She enjoyed laughing and would tell a story in the fullest detail. She was a perfectionist in the kitchen, loved shopping, watching TV, especially Si-Fi movies. She was a fanatic (wow) when it came to cleaning and decorating. She had a real thing with pillows. You could find no less than 4 and up to 6+ on each bed or chair in their home and of course they were in a particular order.
Leaving treasures of memories and love are: her husband of 52 years- Glenn Ray Chavis of the home; two children- Glenn R. “Junnie” Chavis, Jr. (Casey) of Fort Mills, SC and Brandi Delorne Chavis, (William) of the home; four grandchildren-Cameron Hazelwood of South Hill, VA; Kyle Spencer of the home; Zane and Amari Chavis of Fort Mills, SC; four sisters- Ethel M. Edmonds of South Hill, VA; Annette Avery of Hopewell, VA; Jocelyn Jiggetts of South Hill, VA, and Gloria Hill, Tampa of FL; two brothers- Ellis “Vest” Sturdivant (Jackie) and Mallory “Andre” (Chantel) Sturdivant, all of South Hill, VA; four brothers-in-law, William “Sonny” (Linda) Chavis of Glen Allen, VA; John “Al” Chavis (Violet) of Winston Salem, NC; Brian “Skip” (Margaret) Chavis of Chester, VA and Jesse (Christine) Edwards of Rougemont, NC; three sisters-in-law, Rachel Sturdivant of Spotsylvania, VA; Raydean Sturdivant of Baltimore, MD and Jennifer (Michael) Washington of Wilmington, NC; friends at heart- Tawanda Feggins Walker, Carolyn “Byrd” Blackwell, Lois Ann Smith, and Harriett Harris, all of South Hill, VA and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends whom she adored.
