On July 1, 1941, as the sun rose in Mecklenburg County Virginia, it shined its marvelous light upon QUEEN ELIZABETH HARRIS, daughter of the late Leigh Hunter and Carrie Bell Bugg Taylor was born. On January 31, 2024, God stretched out his hands and said, “Come unto me, for this is a journey that we all must take.”
At an early age she was baptized and joined Lombardy Grove Baptist Church. As a devoted member, she was a Deaconess, Missionary and Usher, as well as Treasurer of the Christmas Tree Fund. She was also a member of the Pastor’s Anniversary Committee, the Senior Choir, Secretary for the Sunday school, Teacher for the Youth and Young Adults, and Clerk of the church. She also served as the Secretary for the East End Union. She committed herself to each of these missions, until her health began to fail.
Queen was a graduate of the former East End High School. After graduation she married the late Charlie E. Harris and to this union four children were born. A son- Charles preceded her in death.
Queen was employed for over 25 years at LaCrosse Sportswear until the business closed. She continued her career at the Lake County Area Agency On Aging, and she volunteered her time at the Mecklenburg Senior Citizens Food Bank.
Her pastimes included hair-styling, gardening, sewing, quilting and crocheting, cooking- especially baking cakes.
From the point of failing health Queen was lovingly cared for by her two daughters- Ramona in Prince George’s County, MD and Bernita in Manassas, VA- where she bid her farewell.
Queen leaves to cherish her memory: two daughters- Ramona (Kamau) Jackson and Bernita Harris; one son-Dennis Harris; four grandchildren-Charles Harris, Chase (Rachel) Harris, Kevin Harris, and Keith (Jenny) Harris; six great-grandchildren- Asia, Chris, Amara, CJ, Abigail, and Jackson; two great great-grandchildren- Zachariah and Zephaniah Harris; sister- Freda (Raymond) Taylor-Lawrence; three brothers- Samuel, Lewis, and Calvin (Leona) Taylor; a brother-in-law, Wallace Jones; Ethel (Robert) Smith, whom she reared; God son- Michael Taylor; two adopted daughters- Jackie and Audrey, and a wonderful host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
