MRS. CHRISTINE TAYLOR KING, daughter of the late Perlene Taylor was born January 7, 1932 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia during the Great Depression. When her mother later married William Jones, Christine remained at the family home and was reared by her loving grandparents the late Gertie Boswell Taylor and Wesley Taylor. She departed this life July 16, 2019 in VCU-Community Memorial Hospital, South Hill, VA.
At an early age she was baptized and joined North View Baptist Church. She attended Mecklenburg County Public Schools.
On March 4, 1950, Christine was joined in holy matrimony to Theodore Elvin King, Sr. and to this union four children were born. A son, Carl Lewis, preceded her in death.
During the early years of her marriage, Christine was a devoted homemaker and care giver for her family; including her husband’s elderly parents, Moses and Nannie Mae King, who lived with the family for over ten years. At the same time she worked alongside her husband on the farm as they raised tobacco, corn, other grains, dairy cows, chickens, swine, and various other farm animals. When her children were older and settled in school, she and Theodore, in January 26, 1967, during their mid-thirties, moved to their new brick home, complete with all the modern conveniences that they previously lacked and directly across the road on the farm of her grandparents where she had grown up.
They then retreated from full-time farm life. Christine was employed as a seamstress for Kenbridge Sportswear Inc. and then as a cafeteria aide in the Lunenburg County Public School System. She was doing one of her favorite pastimes-helping prepare warm, delicious and nutritious meals for children of Kenbridge Elementary School (the same school that her three boys had attended); a position she held for twenty years until retirement.
Christine was also a devoted member of the North View Baptist Church for over 75 years. She loved to sing and was the longest serving member of the Senior Choir. In addition she was a dedicated member of the Missionary Circle; she eagerly attended Sunday school, and she was an active participant in weekly Bible Study classes until her health began to decline.
Christine was also known to sport fine legendary fashions. Her daughter, Janice, and she loved to shop. Janice had a keen eye for choosing the right outfit that perfectly accentuated her mother’s beauty and character. As previously noted, Christine loved to cook and her family eagerly looked forward to her fried chicken, potato salad, and fresh vegetable dishes, but were even more anxious to take a bite of her homemade sweet potato pie, coconut pie, or her upside down pineapple cake, or her legendary punch bowl cake; she discovered by way of Miami, Florida from a dear friend, Constance Miller. Christine leaves to cherish fond memories her loving and devoted children-Theodore E. King, Jr. of Columbia, MD and Blacksburg, VA; Calvin L. King, Richmond, VA and Janice King (Scott) Stevens, Winston-Salem, NC; three sisters-Grace Claiborne, East Orange, NJ; Florence Hutcheson, South Hill, VA and Celestine (Lonnie) Gregory, Baskerville, VA; three brothers- Drewry (Venecia) Jones, Chesterfield, VA; Wesley Jones, Bracey, VA and Roy Jones, South Hill, VA; one uncle- Richard M. Taylor, East Orange, NJ; devoted cousin and care-giver, Shirley Jean King, South Hill, VA, and a host of nieces, nephews, other cousins and friends.
