Obituary For Willie Mathis

Willie “Punkin” Taft Mathis, 73, of 603 Kings Road Shelby, NC, triumphantly crossed from this life to eternity on February 2, 2024. He was born on March 22, 1950 in Shelby, NC, to late parents, James Roosevelt “Charlie” and Georgia Ross Mathis.

Willie was a lifelong resident of Shelby, NC and worked many years for Dover Mills in textiles. He was a jack of many trades and earned a living in his later years doing yardwork. He took great pride in providing lawn and handy man services to many regular customers. Willie also enjoyed gardening and being outside, especially in the heat of summer when he would sit on the porch for hours just to soak in the sun.

Willie is preceded in death by brothers Larry Dean Mathis, Steve Mathis, Samuel Napoleon Mathis, Ronald Davenport, and Matthew Black.

He leaves to cherish children Sherrese Beam, Quantraya Merriweather, Cameisha Merriweather, Treveon Leach (Rachel), and Adreian Merriweather Pitts (Michael); brothers Richard Mathis and Donald Davenport; grandchildren Monterio, Ericka, and Malik Merriweather; Omar, Jasmine and Tyler McFadden; Joel Barnes; Teagan, Khaleesi, and Khalil Leach; and Malachi, Michaela, and Ayden Pitts; great-grandchild Yariel; a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews; and special friend Patricia Williams, grandchildren Tamiya and Tamia and her remaining family.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at Ellis Chapel Baptist Church, Shelby, NC at 11:00 AM. Visitation of family and friends will be 10:30 AM to 11:00 AM on Saturday.
