I am saddened to hear that my friend has passed. I used to look forward to reading about Steve's battles in the boxing ring. What a great champion he was! I came to know Steve personally when he showed up at Carl Clary's Karate school. Several of us were training in kick-boxing, so Steve volunteered to help us with boxing techniques. Steve was a south-paw with lightening fast speed and unbelievable power. I truly enjoyed sparring with him, but he being a heavy weight and me being a light weight, would ease up on his power. One day as we were sparring, he asked if I would go full power and speed on him. He said that he wanted to get a true feeling of how it would be to have feet coming at him full speed. I very reluctantly did what Steve asked. My speed caught him off guard a little bit and I kicked him in the mouth. I turned, ran and hid in the main workout area behind the wall because I thought that I had made him mad and I did not want Steve Hoskins to be mad at me. I peeped around the corner to look at Steve, and he said, "man that was a good kick!" I asked if he was mad, and he said, "no, that's what I wanted you to do." He could have knocked me out after that, but he never lost his cool. He complimented me in his very soft tone and said that he wanted to do it some more. I made him promise not to hurt me before I would continue sparring with him though. His training and sparring with me made me a better fighter. I will always remember his kindness, soft voice and his incredible boxing skills, and most of all, his friendship during those days. RIP, Champ, you will never be forgotten. PS: The skills which I learned from Steve I have passed on to my students over the years.

I will miss seeing Steve at Lowe's. We always stopped and talked. We were never in such a hurry that we didn't take time for old friends l knew Steve as well as his brother Ronald and his father Mr. Afield. Steve helped me with hard wood floors and tile work. Steve was a friend that I will miss. God bless Steve and his family Jim Woodard
