Mr. Hollis “Hut” Washington Brooks, 84 of Shelby, NC departed this life on Friday, May 26, 2023 at Henderson Care Center in Forest City, NC. He was born on February 22, 1939 in Jefferson, GA to the late Thurman Brooks and the late Ruby Robison Brooks.
Hollis was a graduate of Green Bethel High School. He was employed with PPG Industries for a while before starting his own bricklaying company. He worked diligently laying bricks for over 30 years and his motto was “Bricks, Blocks and Rocks”. Hollis was a longtime member of New Mt. Olive Holiness Church where he served faithfully as a deacon until his health declined. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening, talking and having a good time.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Airzel “John” Brooks and William Brooks and two sisters, Hazel Guest and Oretha Brooks Gidney.
He will be fondly remembered by two sons, Tracey Johnson (Alice) of Shelby and Michael Roberts of Lincolnton, NC; a brother, Johnny Brooks (Eunice) of Shelby; two sisters, Arneitha Brooks and Lorene Brooks (Alex) both of Shelby; grandchildren, Tracey Johnson, Jr., Spencer Johnson, Cedric Johnson, Breanna Roberts, Andrea Rosemond and Alexander Roseman and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2023 at 1:00 PM at S. T. Enloe Memorial Chapel. Burial will take place at New Mt. Olive Holiness Church. The family will receive friends from 12:30 PM until 1:00 PM on Saturday and at other times at 208 Sandranette St. Shelby.
