Obituary For Eugene Webber, Jr.

Mr. Eugene Webber, Jr., departed this life on Tuesday, August 10, 2021 in his home. He was born November 14, 1929 in Shelby, North Carolina. A 1948 graduate of Cleveland High School, he continued his education at North Carolina A&T State University. In 1952 he entered the Army and fought in the Korean War. Upon returning to the states, he was encouraged to continue his career in the military; however, he was determined to complete his college degree.

After graduating from North Carolina A&T State University in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Vocational Industrial Education, he started his career at Unity High School in Statesville, North Carolina and simultaneously completed his Master of Science degree in 1959 in Industrial Education. In 1959, he returned to Cleveland County to teach at his alma mater, Cleveland High School. As the Civil Rights era brought about substantial change in the school system, he transferred to Shelby Junior High School in 1966, where he was one of the first black teachers at Shelby Junior High teaching Industrial Arts. Eugene Webber retired in 1989 after serving 33 years as an educator.

Since 1946, Eugene was a faithful member of Roberts Tabernacle CME Church where he was appointed as a Trustee in 1963 and also served as the Chairman of the Trustee Board. His love for God, his Roberts family and a natural joy to bring about positive change for the community was evident in his involvement in the church and the community. Eugene was a charter member of the SWATTO Club in 1965, a charter member of the Shelby Exchange Club in 1972 and was a member of the Elk's Club for over 25 years.

Preceding him in death was his wife, Pearl C. Webber; father, Eugene Webber, Sr., mother, Lillie Mae Webber; two sisters, Edna Thompson and Lucinda Webber; a niece, Telecia Webber Meeks; two brothers-in-law, George Thompson and Joe Louis Crosby.

To the family of Mr. Webber. Mr. Webber was one of the first teachers I met my first year of teaching at Shelby Junior High in 1984. His classroom was in the vocational building where i began my career. He was always so kind and encouraging! He was a great teacher and an even greater person!! After he retired, Mr. Webber came back to Shelby Middle and mentored so many young men, continuing to touch the lives of students. I'm so sorry for your loss! I no longer get the Shelby Star, so I just saw about Mr. Webber's passing today. Hate that I missed speaking to his family in person!! Mr. Webber was a great man! Love, Julie Daves
